Vulcan XH558 has a fuel leak

as pretty much everyone of us on here is a techy/mechy/planey/gearhead just an update that I found about the last Vulcan.

    http://www.vulcantothesky.org/news/5...TANT-NEWS.html

IMPORTANT NEWS - Latest on XH558 Fuel Leak.

Issued at 4pm Wednesday 11th September

We have now received a report on the state of the leaking No.5 tank from specialists FPT Industries in Portsmouth.

Given that more than one leak and other signs of deterioration were found, and that the tank is itself over 30 years old, we have concluded that, if repaired, the tank would remain vulnerable to further leaks.

We have therefore decided that repair of the tank would not prove economical and, if reinstalled on the aircraft, could prove to be unreliable.

There is no airworthy spare available; we have accordingly commissioned a new tank to be manufactured immediately.

With an estimated 16 week lead time for manufacture, we are very sorry to announce that it will not be possible to return the aircraft to flight again in 2013.

XH558 has therefore sadly made her last public appearance this year.

We now wish to concentrate on ensuring we are able to secure sufficient funding to return XH558 to the air for another two seasons.

Please await further news in upcoming official newsletters and VTST Press Releases

so its no longer flying until they get a replacement fuel tank.

just incase you are planning any trips especially to see this winged wonder at airshows or the like.

Everything is fixable - at a price!

However, if the original drawings are available a replacement can be manufactured - even if not, it can be reverse engineered.

The quote implies one will be made - the relatively long time scales will be the testing and approvals process.

Re: Vulcan XH558 has a fuel leak

I was under the impression that 2013 was going to be the last flying year for Vulcan. Once the spare parts run out on major engine components, it will be prohibitively expensive to re-manufacture.

Enjoy her while you can. I'll be taking the next available opportunity in my part of the country to see her

I hope they get it fixed, I saw XH558 at Manston earlier this year and the sound was unreal.

Kinda makes me feel slightly better that I can't go to the Southport Airshow this Saturday due to work commitments.
Although I would have loved to see the photos and videos my friends take
