Exclamation Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

    Hi,

Thought I'd post my issue on here as I'm not having any luck with the seller or Google.

Apparently it's been posted 1st class secure, at a Post Office so definitely parcelforce/royal mail.

I know tracking numbers start with 2 letters and ends in GB.

    Well, see for yourself: AI112278449801

14 characters, 12 digits, totalling 14? Something smells fishy.

Or am I mistake, is this simply a signed for rather than trackable?

    Thanks all

Royal mail states 13 characters for a tracking number. Not sure on parcel farce...

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

According to track and trace all numbers should be 13 digits, which (AFAICT) is 2 letters, 9 numbers, GB, and checking a couple of mail receipts I have on my desk (one for Special next day, one for ordinary signed-for) they both confirm that. Looks like a dodgy trace number to me.

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

Hmm the respond I was worried about thanks for confirming.

Strange though, the seller seems completely genuine. Has genuine items up for sale (not all computer parts), email address confirmed on social media sites as real person. Also has bleeding Youtube videos up of him. Location is genuine and his IP address gives the thumbs up also (bit extreme but got to make sure).

All seems out of place to me.

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

It could be a proof of posting receipt number rather than a tracked service. Afraid I don't have any ordinary proofs around though, so I can't check Might be worth clarifying whether he's used a signed-for service or not. If the item was worth more than ~ £50 he's a fool if he didn't - if it was just a cheap item then it often isn't worth paying extra for tracking.

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

I have a lot of proof receipts around and none have any sort of "barcode" on them. He just stated "secure" and every time I ask for what service and to double check the number he ignores.

Yup the item is £55, I specifically ask for tracking and a secure delivery.

What's odd is the email address given is UK, it is registered on Facebook and Twitter, same person. However his "youtube" account specifies a different but similar email address. Both seem to be the same person. Both email addresses are real also (nslookup checked).

Hmm do I email this other address which is supposedly him? Both are the same people from the same place.

Provided it's a secure service it should turn up tomorrow.

Right I've essentially put him in the situation where if he doesn't send proof tonight and the parcel doesn't arrive tomorrow that I'll take action.

Everything's gone pear shaped at the moment. Oh, and most of you will roll your eyes at this, method of payment: BACS

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

Tried it without one of the repeated characters?

ParcelFarce are 9, 13 or 14 characters, but end in gb

Is there a chance it's simply been mistyped? Checked the delivery info against people like dpd?

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

Yeah it isn't recognised on any site, tried all the postal carriers I knew. I tried a lot of combinations and the site just states "Not the correct format".

Hmm right I've had an email back after I had a rant to him. Apparently he isn't used to sending stuff out so he doesn't know. He said he would check back at the post office if I wished.

Now, either he's completely genuine and hasn't got a clue what he's doing, so he may have entered some random characters in off the receipt. Or he knows what he's doing.

Everything seems normal. His bank details are fine, location, email address is real and isn't automated, social network sites, pictures, videos, even his IP. He even suggested meeting up (but I thought it'll cost me the thing to get up there).

If you complain to your bank asap, they can in theory recall the payment, or make a claim against the recipient bank, it's right pain to do though and after the "clearing" period of the transfer (couple of days) it gets harder. For the sake of 50 quid, I don't think you'll get anywhere with them.

Is the seller within travelling distance of you?

Oh damn. Well it's been a day, I'll have to pop down and ask. Fingers crossed I'll get it back. Just worried that if he is genuine I'd just taken back my £50 (well if bank allows it).

Unfortunately I don't even drive, he's in Aberdeen I'm down in South Wales

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

Well it's tricky, you should be able to get the transfer stopped as it shouldn't have hit the guys account yet, but having not given the package enough time to arrive it could be seen as a bit hasty.

For what it's worth, It does sound like he is genuine to me (for £50 I also don't think it'd be worth someone's time setting up such an elaborate 'scam').

I'd be tempted to just wait until tomorrow to see if your item actually shows up. You could ask for a scan/photo of his receipts from the post office if not and go forward from there.

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

Yeah he does seem completely genuine. I was thinking that also; the amount of time it's taken us to sort things out for £55 he may as well just of tried to win the lottery.

It's just strange the tracking number is so dodgy; that said as mentioned it may of just been for the buyers reference rather than an actual tracking number.

Yeah think I will give it until tomorrow, that's 3 days then for a supposed 1st class delivery. I get back around half 3 so should of had a card through if it was unsuccessful.

Thanks for the advice I will see if he can scan the receipt at the post office.

Fingers crossed this turns out well

Thanks to all here, everyone's advice is very helpful to me!!

Agreed, I'd just wait. I don't think you'd get responces like that from a fake seller. I'd expect them to ignore you and give false contact details

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

True that; unless he's a first time scammer!

I will post back tomorrow on the news!!!
"If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0" ||| "I'm not interrupting you, I'm putting our conversation in full-duplex mode" ||| "The problem with UDP joke: I don't get half of them"
"I’d tell you the one about the CIDR block, but you’re too classy" ||| "There’s no place like 127.0.0.1" ||| "I made an NTP joke once. The timing was perfect."
"In high society, TCP is more welcome than UDP. At least it knows a proper handshake."

Re: Any Royal Mail workers here? Suspicious Tracking Number?

Likely just human error, I've done a genuine typo on an rm tracking number as a seller before and ended up with a ranty buyer accusing me of scamming and so on.
