    southwest trains

anyone know if it's worth getting a first class ticket on Southwest trains? (London Waterloo - South Coast.) IIRC these trains don't really have a first class carriage. Or have I got this wrong? I could do with working on the train so after a table and some peace and quiet...

anyone use these cattle wagons? I haven't since I moved back north of the river.

(one off journey with advance ticket discount - can't afford the full fat chebang before you mistake me for some rich banker)

    Re: southwest trains

Yeah, SWT even on local services have first. They're not bad usually.

Rarely an entire carriage though, just a doored section.

    Re: southwest trains

The first class areas do have tables (and power points!) but you need to be nifty to get one.

    Depends on class of train.

    Re: southwest trains

Services to the south coast are usually on a 450 or 444, both have first class sections that are partitioned off but the 444 is much nicer with its larger, comfier seats in a 2+1 arrangement.

I've used the the London - Portsmouth line a lot and I can tell you on weekdays off-peak before the evening rush the trains are very quiet. You're likely to have a 4-seater table all to yourself, so if you're travelling during this time you might want to consider a 2nd class ticket.

    Re: southwest trains

now depends where you are going SWT run to SOUTH WEST
Brighton Bognor etc is SOUTHERN and the units DESIRO so yes its worth it but the standard is better than most SWT first

From Epsom you have a choice of SWT and Southern to waterloo or Victoria north and Horsham( Bognor eventually) the other I always choose southern

PS You think SWT is bad we up in MCR have 1970's trains the south west disposed of in the 1980's that resemble buses (design by BR in 70's parts by British Leyland Brum built in Scotland and not from Girders)and have only 4 wheels per coach called noddy donkeys the ride resembles a kiddy fairground ride ( no 1st !) compared SWT are luxury!

    Sorry

    Re: southwest trains

When I went on a cruise this summer the wife managed to get us 1st Class travelling down. The seats were a bit bigger and there was a bit more room, but it wasn't really that much different to travelling in Std. It was also very busy in 1st on our train, but that could be something to do with it being one of the best trains from London to So'ton for cruise departures...

    Re: southwest trains

South West Trains does have first class carriages, I commute to London from zone 6 area near woking but not in the first class during peak to work and home. The trains services I get on are from either Bakingstoke, Woking or Guildford to Waterloo and back. I have the annual ticket (travelcard on Oyster) are expensive including the tube and a nightmare to commute if there are accident or incident happens. It depends on which type of train you are getting though and this is during the peak period, if you are fast to get on the train early before departure like 10 minutes before or know which train services pulls into the platform, you do have seat guarantee if you are quick .

I commonly commute on the Class 450 Train consist of twelve coaches and has 2 first class compartment near the front and back on services from and to Woking and bakingstoke. Usually this is full of people, however if it really busy people will site inside or stand inside the first class but during summer or the holidays, it is not very packed. The first class carriage has mid-section for first class with tables with guard office and some normal seats at the front and back section of the first class carriage.

The class 455 trains do not have first class and they are usually consist of 8 coaches to 4 coaches, some of the schedules are slow services. I see this jam pack for all stop services or straight to London Waterloo during the peak time.

I have ridden on the class 444 trains one or twice if it is schedule to stop at my stop which is rarely. It is quite nice train, there are first class carriage, do not know the amount but it consist of 10 coaches and they are longer carriages than the others.

Oh and don't forget to register for a Bite card You can get 20% of food purchase depending on the selection of store that supports Bite on their website if you usually grab a bite for long journey home.

    Re: southwest trains

I got 2nd class in the end. Website jacked the prices before I could order. It was fine, no idea what kind of train, but long enough that if you kept walking you found a quiet bit. Didn't get a table, but was just about able to cope with that. The quiet carriage was actually quiet!

Thats one of my pet peeves. I generally don't sit in the quiet section anymore because I would rather deal with the noise of a normal carriage than my anger of inconsiderate / blind / idiots

I had to point out to two young chaps it was the quiet carriage, but they were fine and once they realised they happily moved carriage. Some folk just don't look.
