My Attempt at Being a Good Citizen

On Wednesday I was walking my dogs at 7:45 near my house, when I spyed, in the trees, a brown bag, and lots of papers strewn around. Lots. Concerned I was also gonna find a pair of feet, or an arm poking out, I decided I would go look. Nobody there....but LOTS of importnat stuff. Cheque books. Account statements. Bills. Proofs of Address.

This is either stolen, forged, both, or dumped cos someone bottled out of a scam.

Its raining, and has been all night.

I gather it all up, mark where I found it, and carry it home.

    I ring Crime Stoppers.
"Sorry we can't help with that, we're not the Police you know, report it to this number"

I ring it.....explain what I have found....and after 3 minutes am told he'll put me through to my local station....

"Where have I rung then? "
    "Oxford"
"Why did Crime Stoppers give me this number as I told them I'm from Aylesbury"
"They always put you through to the region HQ and I will redirect it"

    5 minutes pass

"Sorry, no answer from Aylesbury, I'll give you the number and you can try it yourself later"

Deep breath. Onward and upward. Someone might want this stuff. It might be important to either the owner or the Police.

Ring Aylesbury nick......10 ring later and I get a 50 to 60 year old lady who says ..

    "Ello"

Nothing esle...just" Ello" so I appologise for ringing the wrong number cos I am after Aylesbury Police Station and after 10 seconds she says "This IS Aylesbury Police station"

Professional tot he core our Boys and Girls in Blue. If you ring PC World and get a 17 year old Chav you at least get the name of the COmpany you have rung!

    Onward....ever onward.

SO I explain what I have. I have LOTS of stuff.....lots. I read out the names, the addresses, the bank details, the Number Plate of the dudes car that has been Serviced recently.

Shall I leave it for you to collect outside my house?

"No...just bring it in in the next 2 weeks"

    "Wouldnt you like it earlier?"

"We've not had it reported, so no hurry"

I leave my details and leave it in my Kitchen....half in the sink, cos its wet, half on the side units to dry.

    I go to work

At 2pm I get a call from a frenzied PC who wants me to go home right now, and let them have it. All. Now. Please.

"I am at work...you'll have to wait. The chance was given."

"What time are you home tonight?"

    "6:45...shall I see you then."

"No, we finish at 6, can you drp them in at Property, its open til 10pm"

"I shall try, but if its urgent I can be at home at 6:45 and meet you there"

"We dont collect, please drop it in"

She's friendly enough...just seems to think its my duty to risk my job for this stuff.

3:45 CID ring and ask for the name and address of all the stuff. I have no idea..its at home...I try to remember. I do OK. But I gave it all to your desk person this am. They dont have that to hand. Can I drop it in TONIGHT OR TOMORROW EARLY for them to work on. And is it possible it might have fingerprints on it?

"yes...mine....and lots of slugs. It was out all night. But now its in my house cos I was told not to leave it out, so its warm and drying out...no chance of fingerprints now"

A sigh on the end of the phone. My Will to Live is leaving me too, Sergeant

its like the Great Wall of China....you'd need to be a poll vaulter to get at the woman behind it. She is in turn is stood up on a plinth inside this barricade.

My large white polythene bag is eyed suspicioulsy.

"I have come to sign this into Property for PC xyz and here it is"

    "What is it?"

"its a brown bag, with lots of ID and Bank details of a person who I dont know. Here is a mapof where I found it. I have marked the area with this kind of item, and if someone would like to take it now I'd be very greatfull. Thankyou"

this is the best bit....coming now

"So what exactly have you come for?"

    "To sign for this stuff"

"We dont have any stuff for you"

    "No...I am signing this stuff IN....not OUT...in"

"you dont "sign" things in SIR!!!" Contemptuous look

"Sorry ...I dont know the terminology.....can i simply "Deposit" it or whatever"

    "Does it smell?"

FFS its a wet bag of paper.

"No...not yet...I dreid what I could I tried to help as best I can"

She fills in the form, and then....

"Can you sign here and here please"

    "Sign?"

    "Yes"

    "Sign...Sign It In"

"Yes sir..you cant just leave it without signing it"

    I'll go now folks

Zak, I think the problem is that they're totally unused to members of the public trying to help them. It blows a fuse in their head, or something. They were similarly useless when I got involved to try and stop a woman getting her bike nicked.

now THAT I do not need.

    At all

    Period.

It does make sense tho....as to why Crime Figures are on the decrease.

Cos its frikkin impossible to report a crime in the first place

Go to the government website and compose a nice email detailing what happened regarding the process and send it to your local MP's.

NO matter how busy they are they will still reply and if they read this and you state no wonder crime figures are decreasing as its getting harder to report a crime then I'm sure if not the labour MP but the opposition MP's would be interested.

I did do something similar and got a letter a week later from my local MP asking me to meet with them to discuss outcomes and how "they" could help to a situation that arose about 6 months ago. Suffice to say after speaking to them and discussing the issue within 3 weeks the council had done what needed to be done to fix the issue and the problems not arose again.

    You really should write a letter of complaint to somehwere high up, and explain how difficult it is to help out with something like this, and how you and anyone that knows you would now be put off helping out if they found something like this in the future. {EDIT: Wildmonkey got there 1st }

The police's response to all this so far is, imo, completely unacceptable once you get past the funny side, the state of the police is completely tragic. My housemate got shouted at by a policeman for not displaying his new tax disc, the day after it was supposed to be chaged, even though he had just got it! And yet when I got mugged, and indeed everyone else I know has been mugged, the police did sod all about it.

When you see them on the street, do they smile or scowl at you? I have never been smiled at by a police officer. Quite frankly, the police don't seem to care about their public image, and it really annoys me.

I'd like to say that I didn't laugh when I read this, because that would have been utterly callous and despicable. I'd REALLY like to say that. Unfortunately, schadenfreude got the better of me... Poor Zak...
