Having seen the Panorama documentary on packers at Amazon, I feel sorry for them. The pick an item, then they have a set amount of seconds to get the next one, even if it's over the other side of the warehouse and the handset buzzes and bleeps as it counts down. No wonder they package badly when they're under constant pressure.

A lot of stuff I've bought from Amazon is simply just the item with a very well sealed cardboard over layer.

The best HDD I ever received from Amazon was a lovely hard drive at the bottom of this pretty over sized box with what I like to call, over sized confetti. Needless to say it was loose.

I don't blame the employees though, even if they didn't have a set time, packaging thousands of boxes for years on end would probably drive you nuts.

You would have thought by now they would have had a system that could re-order in what order the items were picked based apon the location of the picker to said item.

My understanding is it does. At least that's what I was told by someone who works there. They measure you against the location and distance, with some ability to reduce penalities for harder to pick items.

ordered a HDD from Amazon US - it arrived in anti-static bag in a styrofoam wedge in a tough cardboard box. No complaints there.

SSD arrived just in a cardboard sleeve but looks fine. Will be installing it once work eases up and I actually get some free time again.

Strange. I've ordered a few hard drives from Amazon, and they've always arrived in a box with the standard brown paper I could see Jill wrapping round Jack's crown with vinegar, and the hard drive in an inflated plastic airbag thing.

The SSD I ordered did arrive in cardboard sleeve, but was fine. Sooo yeah. Maybe I'm just lucky!

Re: You know all those people saying Amazon don't package their HDDs well??

Thought I had seen a thread about amazons HDD packaging while back , well its the first time I ordered a hdd from amazon, WD blue 1tb, 2 layers of thin bubble wrap 80% of which was popped , a bit of paper all inside a massively over sized box..... which is worrying :/

and sorry for the thread revival

I bought a HDD from them once. Came in the same envelope thing they send video games in (just card around the HDD which was in a static bag). As you can probably guess, it didn't work...

That was how mine was received too, however it did work and has been faultless for the last 6 years - WD Blue.

Re: You know all those people saying Amazon don't package their HDDs well??

Ordered a HDD from Amazon a few weeks ago. Delivered loose in a big box (with other items) but wrapped in bubble wrap, didn't work. Got a replacement which arrived again loose in a big box, this time without bubble wrap, however it worked.

Seems to be the luck of the draw.

I've only ever ordered 2 hard drives in my life and bother have arrived in this kind of packaging surrounded by lots of normal bubble wrap and a very sturdy cardboard box. But I've never ordered a hard drive from Amazon! Scan only

About 2 years ago I ordered 2 WD Black 2TB drives, about 2 weeks apart, once from Amazon and once from a 3rd party seller on Amazon. The amazon one came in packaging you would expect for a book, the 3rd party seller had basically created a shoebox-sized maggot out of bubblewrap. Both are working fine.

Sheesh. Knew Amazon packaging was sketchy but didn't realise how brutal it was. Guess I won't pick my HDDs up there any time soon. Wrecked a lot of my books too...

Yeah it appears their "Frustration Free Packaging" isn't suitable for every item!
