    Telephone Spam

C'mon, you all know what I mean..... ur home phone rings, you pick up expecting it to be ur mum or someone and instead you get a recorded message reply to your bright and breezy "Hello...?" telling you that:
    a) you've won a cruise
    b) you've won some money
    c) offering you a once in a lifetime opportunity
    d) you've been specially selected for a special prize
    ...blah...blah...blah...
if you call back on a high rate number - PRIZE??? Yeh right!

Very, VERY annoying and on the increase it would seem. Ive received at least 4 calls this week, 1 in person and 3 messages on my call minder.
Speaking to someone at work it seems that other people have noticed an increase in these calls too - anyone else know what Im on about or received alot of these calls?

Or am I being victimised by these people??

I've had a few of these calls on my home phone as well.I just put the phone straight down just in case I get charged for anything. They are very annoying as well. They should be made illegal.

The worst ones (I get them all the time) are the ones that when you hang up, they keep playing and won't stop until they're finished.

They are illegal guys, i work in this industry and can say without doubt that when checking up to make sure that we weren't trying to do anything illegal with our services we were looking to develop that we checked with several parties from the DTI, Icstus, OFCOM etc to make sure, and the only way you can have an automated system dialing people is if they have agreed to it, or before the person answers the phone it must transfers to a human agent.

America has this all the time tho..

apparently I was wasting HIS time ???

TPS is the dogs widger (that means its good ).

Read more and sign up online, it has completely stopped my home number receiving any telephone spam - http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Bit of a tip for you, if you do receive a spam call after joining TPS (and waiting 28days), ask the person who is calling, get a name and company name first. Once you have done that tell them that they are calling a person that is registered to TPS and that they are liable to be fined.

Then pass on their details to TPS.

TPS by the way is Telephone Preference Service.

I use one or two different tactics....

Where they are international calls, I then block the number.

    If its a person straight off, I might do things such as;

Ask them to hang on for a minute, put the phone down on the sofa and go make a cup of tea, then ask them if they can wait a minute etc etc.

Pretend I think its a friend mucking about trying to prank me, saying stuff like "Bob, stop larking about.... I know I got you with the custard at the pub last night, but you're gonna have to try harder.... It won't work Bob, I know its you".

Act REALLY interested, but restrict your answers to 'yes' and 'no' only, but change the inflection each time.

Ask the person on the other end what they're wearing, then start breathing heavily whilsts slapping yourself on the back of the neck.

Turn the TV or radio up really loud and put the phone in-front of it.

Ask them to hold one minute, then pick up the phone and start ranting about how late your pizza is and what are they going to do about it?

Ramble an answer to any question. Eg. they ask"What is your current salary?", your reply starts, "Well, I wouldn't say I earn a huge amount, but its enough to be comfortable on... now Bob, my colleague, he reckons that we should be due AT LEAST a 3% rise this year, just to keep our money in line with inflation, but I didn't think inflation was that high, did you? Anyway, I was saying to Bob the other day by the coffee machine, ooh, we got a new coffee machine, its really good, its does these lovely chocolate expressos which are just right for a 9.30 coffee, of course, you have to pay now, which we never did with the old machine but Mr Wilson, that's my supervisor......" And rattle on and on without actually answering their question...

And theres a few others, but I have to go now, I have a call coming in....

    Yes.

Apart from one or two recorded ones (which by the way have to be the most annoying ones), we have receive no marketing calls.

It works brilliantly! Though I've had one call from NPower of all people asking if I am sure that I wanted them to stop calling me in case they may have special offers or price savings. Suffice to say if he did what I told him to do with his phone, he'd need a tub of vasoline, a pair of tongs, ibuprofen and a few mates to help him. Hate cold callers especially npower ones,

K so it is a problem then - will register with TPS and see if it makes any difference.

If not - think I'll give them Deck's no so he can sort them out!

It does work. I am always banging on about the TPS. They are quite a powerful body now... As is the Mail Pref Service.

Just remember to give it time to work through to all the telesales databases.
