Unless you are living in isolation, most people will have heard that Nelson Mandela died this evening.
Perhaps the greatest statesman of his generation, and a person of whom it can truly be said "He left the world a better place than he found it".

He lived a long and full life. The TV coverage has been quite touching.
Always laughed at the Chris Rock skit which has a bit on Mandela: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EfLbDFlrQg (nsfw!)
@ 3:45 on the video
Can anyone explain all this outpouring of grief over a convicted child killer? or does the world now forget why he was in prison? murdering over 150 men , women and children is a remarkable achievement! he also never felt any remorse or guilt over what he did and he never renounced violence. so whilst his achievements after he was released are commendable - the man is no saint.
erm you have no idea of why he spent 27 years in prison then? go read up about the Umkhonto we Sizwe and see exactly what they did.
I ask you , why are you holding a convicted terrorist and child killer in so much esteem? if you gloss over hitlers past - would he be the same to you??
Hitler committed suicide in a bunker.
Mandela reached for peace, didn't appear to bear grudges for his incarceration, he took his punishment. It was a messed up time back then, it would have been very hard to find any leader with clean hands. Mandela, whilst not perfect changed.
In a way, it is almost worth celebrating someone who changed more.

Ooops - you forgot to mention the attempted genocide bit...
As you say Mandela reached out and while he could easily have stood by and let the ANC continue down a path of violence, he did not.
And while South Africa may not be a perfectly peaceful nation now, it it certainly better than many other African states in that is has a democratically elected government that rules by consensus.

Many people in the apartheid age wanted nothing short of genocide.

NO - he never till the day he died renounced violence! why do you think it took the USA till 2008 to remove him from the terrorist list? he never accepted guilt or showed remorse for any of the hundreds of deaths he was involved with or the thousands of people he ordered killed.
In War, men do terrible things.
In Civil war it is possible they do even worse.
Human nature should be the ability to show remorse and to see it in others.. to understand that people do what they do for what they believe to be the civil best.
Human nature is to err, and civility is to stop when you see yourself erring.
Mother Theresa herself was not always in best company, now was she?
I myself think Winston Churchill to be one of times greatest leaders, but he certainly wasn't the nicest chap... he had wars to win and people to kill.
Nelson Mandella.... I hope you RIP old man. I truly do.

Mandela certainly achieved great things, and changed the world as we know it. He used terrorism and attacks on civilians to fight against an oppressive regime, went to prison for it and on his release was able to use more peaceful means to affect change in that country.
It will be years before the true legacy of this change is really known. South Africa seems to be following Rhodesia's example.
I think he died months ago.
