What camera do you use? and are your Photo's on your website compressed into smaller JPEGS or scanned or what?

Awesome composition....average quality just wondered what gives. You wasting your time with a cack camera or is it a website hosting thing?

    demon quality composition....but appaling quality

That looks like a high iso film grain to me..

And it looks like it's a scan of the original too

thanks for liking the picture - its a scanned in version of a hand printed image so I guess its not as tippity top quality as it could be. its also a bit experimental - I'm not sure if you know much about darkroom processes but basically the top half [clouds] are exposed for longer and at a greater contrast level than the sea and rocks using a bit of trickery and careful hand work...hence an increase in grain. but grain isn't always a bad thing. there is a way of reducing this grain though by split contrast exposing [or something]...but I didnt know about that when I did this one but i'm not sure it would have improved the overall picture.
If I didn't play around with the print exposure then it would have looked really bland - and a very flat sky - which wasn't how it looked when I took it, so required playing with and burning in.

I've no problem with the camera - an Olympus OM1, quite old but very good quality. I have some macro pictures that are pretty good and would imediately show any loss of quality if there were any - some are on the picture server with the one you found above. the image was compressed a little if I remember rightly also. and the film used was Ilford HP4 plus...fairly standard film. and I had a Red b&w lens filter on as well to aid contrast [despite needing a bit more playing around in the darkroom to achieve the end result]. So i don't think its a film/equipment issue more an experimental printing 'lets see, what if I did this' type thing going on. Apart from the grain coming through you can sort of see it works quite well...blame the hosting cause the above is not as good as the original as I can see some definition is certainly lost and certain points where white and black occur e.g. on the water there is an element of confusion when the image is compressed a bit...

anyway - what would you suggest about upping quality yet maintaining contrast?
    cheers for your appreciation!

p.s. hp4 film is ISO 125 if I'm not mistaken and hence fine grain...you could say I tried hard to increase the grain but I believe its a product of increased contrast beyond the level expressed by the neg. Either that or I should have usd a greater apperture during printing and thus required less time - needed less contrast control and all the rest of it - I know what I could do to alter i, and i could go on but then I'd probably bore you!

If you like really really really decent picture taking check out http://robbiekhan.co.uk/

It's a guy who's younger than me, he's studying at the same university as me. All he does is take pictures! Absolutely excellent stuff though, a true inspiration.

yup some quality stuff there - he uses digital which is very accessable and I'm thinking of getting a decent digital camera...only thing is the body alone costs 1200! then there's lenses and other stuff. Think i'm doing ok with film at the moment, the real bugger is all the film companies are stopping making b&w, so much so I can't find a film i need for tomorrow when I'm ment to be taking pictures at a christening. its annoying that digital seems to be taking over...

its true, ilford went under a couple of months ago, agfa are down sizing and so are all the rest due to the ever increasing demands of digital over traditional processes, a great shame if you ask me.
