Ever been guilt tripped for leaving a company?

Pretty much as the topic, i feel completely emotionally exhausted, i handed my notice in today and i feel absolutely exhausted, as instead of throwing me out the window for leaving them like i expected. I got the complete polar opposite. Don't leave we really like you as an employee. We can sort your money out etc.

However then only thing i can think of to cope with the rest of work I have left is to put Care Bears Movies 1-20 on DVD and take them into work and have a competition between which one tears me my heart apart first hehe

Anyone else had something like this happen?.

Last job; Applied for two different positions - one on the same contract I was on, one on a different contract.
Was offered the first - pay was an insult so I told them.
Was asked how much I'd want for the second. They offered it me.
Told them to stick it up their bum, cos i'd got a better job elsewhere.

Was then treated to 2 weeks of guilt and "ooooo, are you SURE you're making the right decision..."

6 months later, I believe there's only about 10% of the staff left.

Bit rude to ask but curious, why did you leave your job?

A double figure £K pay difference to one i got offered?. Not the only reason, but i liked my current job, however i got an offer land on my plate worth more money than i could ignore, so i went and looked at the place, liked it and moved forward with it. My current place of work now seem to be spending much more time realising what i'm worth to them. Hence the guilt trips and offer to match the salary i'm now offered.

    Hence the question

And if things were the other way around, do you think the directors would be losing much sleep about losing an employee?

Whoever is guilt tripping you obviously realises they're losing a good employee and doesn't want the hassle of trying to find a replacement. At the end of the day if they expect to keep you they should do better than relying on your goodwill.

It's business at the end of the day

Do what you will enjoy most. Unless you really, really need the money, working at a firm purely for financial reasons is, in my experience, a bad move.

I told my company I was looking for jobs elsewhere (which is common, high staff turnover in my industry), and I have been called into head office first thing tomorrow morning to discus my promotion within the company. More money while I sort my new job out? Yes please!

Hence i made sure it was a good move for me. I wouldn't move for just money. The new place has some rather interesting stuff in my field that i won't get exposure to in my current job.

The money is nice sure, but to be honest it is only a reflection of what i'm worth. (even if that does sound egotistical)

I got guilt tripped for leaving JS, never appreciated me until i handed in my notice after much "your the best bloke we've got down there" (the week previous i'd been told by the same manager that I was taking advantage of the systems, that customers had complained that I looked like a ruffian and that my scan and pack wasn't up to scratch) then I got the "well whats your problem with the job" to which i replied its boring having to put up with everyone else's messes and this jobs not exactly fun packed now is it? "what would it take to make you stay?" - £7 an hour and the ability to smoke and pack....

If a company is not willing to pay it's staff what they are worth then you walk simple has that.

I think you made the right choice TiG - isn't the new firm less likely to want to get rid of their tech team , due to actually selling some products ?

They may well match the salary of the new job but you can be sure you won't see a pay rise any time soon. Once you've made the decision to take another job you shouldn't look back. If your current employer couldn't see what you were worth at the time there's no reason to think they'll see your worth in a year's time. In addition, it's always good to get new challenges and different employers when you're climbing the ladder, you're more attractive CV material if you haven't only worked for one company, it demonstrates flexibility and a desire to move forward.

In was a network admin for a medical company and was working inside a 6 month probation period. after 5 months I told them my market worth was far above what they were paying me.

A week later they let me go and then realised that I held all the passwords to all 6 of their servers and mail system and more importantly I was the only one who knew how the new Oracle based graphics database worked.

    Best £1000 I ever made
