    Places to visit

So I got a free-week coming up soon, though of visiting some nice spots in.. Scotland. My first though was to visit the Stonghenge as I thought it was somewhere in the middle of the UK, but its a tad bit too far. Besides the loch-ness .. loch and the Malt Whisky Trail. Is/are there any other good place(s) to visit?

Just looking for personal recommendations, nothing seems to be catchy enough on their tourism website.

    Re: Places to visit

Edinburgh's good for a few things: you can potter round Edinburgh Castle, watch the city through the Camera Obscura, wander down the Royal Mile, then trek up the hundreds of steps in the Scott Monument. If you're an outdoorsy type person you can also wander round Holyrood Park and up to Arthur's Seat.

If you're up for travelling a bit, you could also head down to either Carlisle or Newcastle and do some of Hadrian's Wall, or visit Berwick on Tweed and nip across to Lindisfarne. All depends on whereabouts you'll be staying and what you want to do really...

n.b. all links above are pretty much first off the google search - I've opened them all in Chrome without warnings, but I can't guarantee they're the best sites to visit for those attractions...!

    Re: Places to visit

I think most places up there are nice to visit! They don't need catchy tourist websites. I'll second Edinburgh, but also Mull and Arran.

The trossachs are pretty nice and are close enough to glasgow you'll need a car though. If you/travelling partner are into downton abbey Inverary castle (top end of loch lomond, an hours very scenic drive north of glasgow) is where they went on holiday in last year's christmas special, and is a pretty nice place.

    Re: Places to visit

if you're prepared to tavel to Kent.. right down to Dover.... and if you can spend ALL day there....

    Dover Castle.

it's mind bogglingly good..... really is one of the finest places to visit in England.

Maybe find a good B&B on Trip Advisor, and have 2 days there .... that Castle is minimum 1 whole day...

    it's amazing....

    Re: Places to visit

Not too keen on Dover Castle any more. Used to go annually as kids as it was an amazing day out. This year when we went we found all the tunnels were no longer properly open for viewing, and the two that were open use projectors to show how it used to look rather than the set up scenes.

The actual castle itself is still fantastic though.

    Re: Places to visit

    Visit Glenfinnan.
See the viaduct from Harry Potter (if you must) and explore the history of the Jacobite Rebellion.
Stop off at the Glenfinnan Inn for food and say hi to Duncan and his team. Try the local venison and a pint or few of Glenfinnan Gold, ideally with a few drams of Balvennie.
Be there for Thursday evenings as they have the Glenfinnan Ceilidh band.

Then take the Road To The Isles and explore along that route, while being stunned by the scenery!

We are getting better weather than the south of England at the moment. Storms have blown down a bit by the time they get to us in the North East of Scotland

Fort William is a really nice little town, although I probably wouldnt recommend trying to climb Ben Nevis at this time of year
