That sounds good. We're all experienced RPers, just don't have much time!

Forgot to mention, rulebook is only £6 and a setting book around £20

I'm a big fan of Dixit. Its a really lovely game to play, although it needs more than two people to play it (although I have seen some 2-player variant rules I am not sure how much fun it would be).

Works really well with a group, although ideally everyone needs to know each other else it can be a bit tricky. The basic premise of the game is that everyone has 6 cards in their hand, everyone takes it in turn to be the 'storyteller', when you are the storyteller you choose one of the cards in your hand and try and describe it in a cryptic fashion, you lay the card face down on the table and everyone else has to choose a card in their hand that they feel fits the story you gave and lay that face down on the table. You then shuffle the cards and reveal them one by one, everyone else then has to try and guess which card was yours.

Not sure the description helps, I know Tabletop did an episode with Dixit which shows how the mechanics work though.

    You have been warned!!

    I'd 2nd this one.

I'd also suggest Shadows over Camelot or Battlestar Galactica but nether of these work with 2 players you really want 4 or more.

Dominion is also worth looking at, there's an online version of it http://www.goko.com/games/Dominion free-2-play with the basic set, additional sets of cards will cost you money.
The reason I mention this is that you can try it out online and see if you like it, then you can get the actual card game if you do.

Re: Alternative gaming Discussion - Board Games

So finally had the chance to pop into my local friendly gaming store and was surprised that they weren't actually that much more expensive compared to Amazon. A few pound at most, which I am fine paying since the shop keeper spent a while actually listening to what I like to play, experiences etc then made a few good recomendations (which were all on my shopping list anyway).

Unfortunately Agricola was sold out so I went for the 2-player version All Creatures Big and Small, and also Ticket to Ride as a good starter game for 'board game night' with friends.

Only played All creatures Big and Small so far. The rules and variety of actions possible per round were quite tricky to grasp initially, as was the scoring systemt, but after 2 games we are absolutely loving it. Glad we went for this rather than the bigger and more complicated full version of Agricola for now.

I also persuaded my fiancee to buy Citadel for me as a birthday gift, sadly I will have to wait until next month to unwrap the celophane :'-(

Re: Alternative gaming Discussion - Board Games

Was bought "Carcassonne" the other day and although being apprehensive about playing it due to a terrible experience with the mobile app version, it turns out it is a pretty good game. Like a puzzle but with point scoring, it works well since some turns are competitive, others are defensive and the rest are co-operative. Our second favourite behind Ticket to ride.

On the other side of things, she finally allowed me to play Citadels. Damn what a disappointment, perhaps we are doing something wrong or need to adjust our play, but the game play time seems cantered around choosing character cards. The rest of it plays quickly, but the character selection takes ages and leaves the other player twiddling thumbs while they wait.
