    Scargill in more trouble

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...shire-25681118

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is threatening to sue its former leader Arthur Scargill for £100,000, a BBC Inside Out investigation has found.

The money was paid to cover legal bills run up by the International Energy and Miners Organisation (IEMO), of which Mr Scargill is president.

The IEMO spent it recovering a loan of £29,500 given to former NUM chief executive Roger Windsor
It appears that he has been questionable in his dealings, the implication that the judge questions the document granting him residency in a very valuable flat is rather concerning.

But at least all those NUM peoples dues have been put to good use, afterall he is their kind of fat cat.

Aren't you jumping the gun a little? A discussion on the basis of allegation is just idle gossip.

Let's see what transpires. There are no flies on Arthur.

What? I make it clear I thought that this is a concerning issue. Nothing has been ruled yet. However the source for some of the money should be a big concern to anyone involved.

I can't tell if you are seriously defending this or not. But over half a million quid has been transferred to an organisation that has no filed accounts for 20 years.

When you think how few members they have, if some of this is true, they've effectively fleeced around £250 per member that is currently under investigation Add in the home the legal fees, that numbers going to be over £500 per member.

As you are normally pro union, why don't you want these people to be brought to justice?

Ah no - he lost that last year when the NUM finally got fed up with supporting him.

If there is wrong-doing justice will prevail. Imho, it's early days yet; speculation is pointless.

Next time you are saying something about finance (and tarring multiple industries with the same brush) can I take the same tone?

Someone is going to court for his hand being firmly wedged in the till along with his friends.

As a result you want to ignore the crime and make this about me? Come on. Do you think it's ok what he is accused of, and the accountancy irregularities question why no one has brought this before?

The fact you are saying this is about me, rather than the criminality in question is most odd.

I'm not saying it's about you. I'm simply trying to be polite. Accusations need to be proven or there is no crime under our system of justice. Personally, I'd prefer to wait and see what happens; you seem ready now to start erecting the gallows .

You'll notice the paucity of contributors to this thread and we can presume that to be because there's nothing to actually discuss as yet.

You are, of course, quite right about innocent until proven guilty, though that applies to criminal cases and from my brief reading of the article, this is a civil dispute between Scargill and the NUM, not a criminal case anyway.

And, while it has no direct bearing on the merits, or otherwise, of this case, I found the judge's comments on the last case illuminating .... regarding
"a lack of transparency" in Mr Scargill's dealings, and he had been "prepared to be economical with the truth".

The judge said: "I believe he suffers to a high degree from the common tendency to reconstruct his recollection in a manner favourable to himself."
    Ouch!!

That would, I have to say, fit with my personal opinion of Scargill, and while I have no knowledge of the upcoming case, if he were held liable to the point of personal bankruptcy, I would laugh so hard it'd hurt. I detest the man.

It's not really an 'Ouch!' though is it, because the Judge himself said it was a 'common tendency'. In fact, I can’t imagine that there are too many people, in civil or criminal cases that, when they are the defendant, who cover themselves in glory in this regard.

    Re: Scargill in more trouble

Hard to care to be honest - I strongly dislike both Scargill and the NUM for past misdeeds. Other than that I hope the case is tried fairly, this is one of those rare cases I'm glad the lawyers get to lift a load of fees from the parties involved.
