    Recommendations for 'Lite' online backup?

MODS please move this if not in the best place. Wasn't sure which forum was best.

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could give me your opinions on online backups/archiving.

I have a small number of files (but important) that I want to regularly backup online. I have a local backup drive but want something online just in case something happened to the drive.

The size of the data is just over 2 GB and it will grow, but relatively slowly, it MIGHT reach the 3GB mark in a year's time. It's a configuration file for a program I'm using and customizing and some related input/output data that I'm working with day to day. I don't need regular access to the data but it is irreplaceable so I want to ensure it's properly backed-up. The data isn't especially sensitive - I doubt it would be useful to anyone else - so I'm not massively concerned about that side of things. I could always go for a third-party encryption solution if need be.

I know there are the free options out there, Google Drive, MS Skydrive etc. but I don't mind paying a reasonable amount if it's worth it, and although the bigger companies like Google and MS should be stable, I'm a bit concerned (paranoid?) that a free service doesn't offer any guarantees.

I'd appreciate any recommendations or suggestions along those lines.

    Thanks!

How sensitive is the contents of these documents? If you are happy putting them online, just use SkyDrive, if you pay for anything, it stays.

But tbh the free version isn't going anywhere anytime soon, it is far too integral to their long term plans.

I would recommend against DropBox, they've had far too many security snafoos for my liking.

If you want a secure, free service, try Spideroak. I think it's 2GB for free users, and an extra free GB per referral (IIRC the referrals don't have to pay, just have to register and install).

There are other less secure options as you've mentioned.

if its not sensitive, as in not interesting to anyone, just stick it on two or more cloud storage solutions. the chances of say skydrive and google drive failing irrecoverably are (imo at least) slim to none. One or both might go paid for, but thats not going to lose you data.

Thanks for the input. I'll take a closer look at Skydrive. As I said, sensitivity isn't really an issue. I'd still be interested to hear if anyone else has any recommendations. Otherwise, thanks!

+1 for SpiderOAK for secure data backups
and Google Drive for sharing files between devices.

I have been using SpiderOAK to backup important files since 2011 and it works rather well for me.
If do decide to give them a go, you can try promo code WorldBackupDay, which should upgrade the account to 5GB.

box.com (free up to 10GB, limited to 250MB file size or £7pm up to 100GB) is one of the bigger providers and has a lot of corporate clients.

I think you'll be alright with backing up to the likes of Google Drive, SkyDrive, Dropbox. If you're worried about fire, theft or water damage then you could keep an extra backup on SD/USB and put it in your wallet or on a keyring.
