Flying visit to London end of January - suggestions ?

    Evening folks,

I'm off to London on the 26th for a course on the 27th/28th, I'll have nights free (or maybe a few drinkies with the other guys on the course) so has anyone got any suggestions for night time antics?

I'll be around Bishopsgate, I think (depends if I can get accommodation nearby) I don't know London at all!

    Cheers southerners!

    Rob

What sort of thing are you after? Are you on your own? Do you want to take your lady up the Oxo Tower? (sorry obligatory reference).

What kind of thing do you like, are you after museums, food, culture?

Shame you leave on the 28th, you will miss the Lates at the Science Museum!

Just something to pass the time really, I'm on my own, not sure what others are doing yet (some people from all over the place going to the course) so I might be kept busy if everyone is stuck in the same hotel.

Science Museum would have been ace, stuff like that is probably my preference but of course is mostly closed by the time I'm done for the day!

Might go early on Sunday so there's some time I might have free.

The Science museum Lates is on the 29th. (V&A + Natural History have theirs on the Friday 31st!)

If you have the option to stay I'd recommend it.

So what time do your things finish? You've got the whole of the 26th right?

I'm back in work Wednesday so staying isn't an option I'm afraid.

Course usually finishes about 4.30pm so I've got Sunday (will get in around 2pm I think) and the Monday night to fill. Guess I should hope my Vita 64GB card arrives before then

Well it really depends on what you want to do. You could do pretty much anything from say seeing book of mormon, having amazing foods, some museums, going shopping, differen't parts of town.

If the weather is good I recommend becoming familiar with the cycle hire scheme. Maybe having a cocktail in Sushi Samba or similar tall venue place.

What type of things do you like?

I'd be up for book of mormon, good call, I'll need to look into that.

If I'm on my todd then bars and meals are out so I guess it's shopping, shows or just sight seeing

trying to sort out a meal with a few friends staying nearby so I'll bother them for stuff to do as well!

Book a table at the restaurant at the top of the Gherkin. Prices will be extortionate though!

British Museum in Bloomsbury's worth a visit, and free... You're close to Oxford Street/Soho/Theatreland then for shopping and other pursuits...

    Meh.

Unless it's changed you have to be a member, or work in the building.

It's very pretty. But ultimately, you are better off being in an ugly building (Tower42, Herron!) looking at the pretty one. Than in the shorter pretty one looking at the mostly ugly buildings.

Yeah, you can also go to Duck & Waffle ( I think ) restaurant at the top of Heron Tower.
There's Bricklane nearby. Try out the curry houses ?

Re: Flying visit to London end of January - suggestions ?

I'd strongly recommend against bricklane, most of my foodie friends and I concur it's the worst curries in London.

However I would say that just because you are on your own doesn't mean you can't eat out, granted it means you probably don't want to go to the Ivy or Hibiscus (that is unless you get a high class escort, what's your budget?), but there are plenty of places that the whole "I'm on work alone dinner" thing won't surprise anyone.

Is there any kind of genre of food you like best?

ooh why didn't I think before, sushi! i reckon there ought to be 1 or 2 restaurants in London?!

side note, has anyone ever stayed in the 'Tune' hotels? they're basic and small but really close to Bishopsgate?

London Eye after dark is definitely worth experiencing.

Re: Flying visit to London end of January - suggestions ?

Well I'm meeting up for a meal on Monday night so I just have Sunday by myself, should arrive about 2PM and I've found a few sushi restaurants close by so that's my first plan.

Is the eye good then? £30 for a big ferris wheel seems steep

If you get a chance and find yourself in London Bridge area try Borough Market for your food needs. Its a fantastic opportunity to try new stuff.
