Amazon DSR return - only option is collection or dropping off at collect+

I went to return my overrated Samsung 840 EVO and the only option it gave me was to drop it off at a collect+ place for 4 quid or or arrange a collection for 6.

Has anyone come across this problem before? did you just select collect+ and send it back via royal mail etc anyway?

if so did you get refunded okay?

    -

When I sent back something defective last week I didnt have this problem.

If there is nothing wrong with the device but it just doesn't quite live up to your expectations then Collect+ return for 4 quid seems reasonable to me. I personally found the service extremely convenient as there is a collection point less than half a mile away (Asda).

Yep, I had this & brought it up on a similarish thread recently.. no idea when they brought it in but wasn't aware of it til I went to return item.

Personally I wasn't going to try returning by post despite selecting collect+ as I imagined it would create problems with correct admin/paperwork or something - or they would just offer you Royal Mail presumably - so I don't know for certain.

If you select replace & buy something (anything) off Amazon, then post option seemed to come back into play, worth it if you are buying something anyway. Collect+ being no use to me I gave returning a miss in the end as it wasn't a faulty item, just a book I was undecided about.

However shouldn't defective returns be post paid anyway..?

It's not defective just that benchmarks always show it with rapid mode in which is a system ram cache/disk which of course makes it look better than it really is.

Collect + for 4 quid is more than the post office and they are further away in some dodgy places near me.

I think collect+ is a tracked service - so you need to compare that with Royal Mail's tracked service - you may find Collect+ is cheaper. The return options may be dictated by the value of the item.

Sorry, my misreading of your last sentence. In which case, yes your options are the same as I was offered for non-defective returns - don't really get the logic of why royal mail becomes an option if you are replacing, there must be some reason best known to themselves..

Send it via Royal Mail to the address on collect+ label and enclose a piece of paper with the RMA number, reason for return and action requested i.e. refund
Your RMA number is the one above the barcode.

If you send back by collect+ Amazon will instantly begin the proccess of refunding when the person in the shop, petrol station etc. scans the parcel. Worth thinking about if you need your money back faster.

Re: Amazon DSR return - only option is collection or dropping off at collect+

Can retailers really force a certain type of carriage on their customers for DSR returns?

It sounds a bit implausible to me, but haven't read the conditions in a long time.

I thought returns is free, if you haven't opened it ( assuming OP you haven't )

I needed to return a faulty item and this Collect+ was the only option offered. I'm pretty sure reg. 17 (4) of the DSR says you have no obligation to run around like Santa delivering parcels for them.

To their credit, Amazon's CS gave me RM as an option and offered to collect with City Link.

Yes, reg 17 (4) says: "The consumer shall not be under any duty to deliver the goods except at his own premises and in pursuance of a request in writing" which is pretty clear cut - the seller should arrange for courier pick up from your premises.

use the contact us option for a call back, they will generate an RMA for self return.

The consumer is under, essentially, two statutory duties, if the supplier has their T&C's right :-

    - return the goods to the supplier, at the consumer's expense, and
    - take "reasonable care" of the goods, until they're are returned.

If you do not return the goods, at your cost, then the supplier can arrange to pick them up. However, if they do, they ARE entitled to charge a sum "not exceeding the direct cost" of doing so, from any refund.

It seems to me that the cost of the supplier engaging a courier to do a one-off collection is likely to be significantly higher than either £4 or £6, in this case.

As for insisting a specific courier method being used, no, they cannot exactly stipulate that, BUT you are required to take "reasonable care" of the goods, and they do have some lattitude to define what they consider that to mean. If you return the goods another way, and something goes wrong, perhaps because you did not use a legally valid delivery point, then the consumer could find himself being sued for breach of statutory duty.

While they cannot dictate the delivery method, you ARE under a duty to take reasonable care to ensure the goods are received by the supplier, and are not damaged in transit. I'd suggest the best way to do that is to package them at least as carefully as they were on delivery to you, and in the absence of a very good reason for not doing so, to use the methods the supplier suggested .... or to let the supplier collect, but be prepared to pay the 'direct cost" of organising that.
