    Unhappy Posts deleted?

Don't know if this is the right forum to post this, but more than half of my posts seem to have been deleted (granted, I only had about 10 posts). I can't for the life of me figure out why this has happened, but I have to admit that it certainly makes me feel very unwelcome around here. Could someone please enlighten me as to where I apparently went wrong...?

    TIA,
    /az

    Re: Posts deleted?

You'd have to speak to the mods for the exact reasons, but if you're sure they weren't breaking any rules then my guess is it's not directly your fault, but the fault of those who sign up to Hexus, quickly post non-constructively on anything they can find for 20 posts to get free delivery at Scan, and then disappear never to be seen again.

Because of this, I think if you're a new poster and make several posts in a short space of time it's likely the mods will take a look at the content of the posts and see if they're adding anything - bumps to old topics or 'my favourite movie is' type posts might not be seen as adding much to a tech forum so might be removed until you've been around the forums a bit longer.

That's just my guess though - I haven't seen what posts you've been making - a mod should be able to advise (privately).

    Re: Posts deleted?

Thank you very much for your reply. It's much appreciated.

Considering I don't even live in the UK I probably can't use free delivery from Scan for anything. To give an example (and just one) of one of my posts that was deleted I replied to the thread about one's favourite text editor in the Software/Programming and Web Development sub forum, where I stated that I prefer UltraEdit for the odd bit of text-editing and the Visual Studio IDE with Visual Assist for programming.

Now, perhaps I've broken some rule I'm unaware of, but I can't really see what that should be. I've probably made the same mistake again by giving the example, but if so, it's as unintentional as the first time.

But then again, if posting rules are this strict it doesn't really invite to participate in the forum...

    Re: Posts deleted?

Well I can second the welcome certainly! From the point of view of this fellow poster the rules aren't too strict here - it's a relaxed but respectful family forum, and you're more likely to have any rule breaking posts edited or deleted (usually with an explanation) than have any punitive action taken like bans.

The staff are friendly and as you're finding out, happy to engage in private discussion over these kinds of matters.

Thank you for your private message. For good reason I haven't replied to your private message (however, I just might do so once my post count reaches critical mass ), but I appreciate what you wrote. Like you said there was this one post, and I would have understood why *that one* was removed, but I couldn't quite figure out why the others were removed.

    Not to my knowledge, no.

I'm a wee bit farther away than Scotland. A bit more to the east, and down I guess. Denmark, to be precise.

I participate in quite a few forums, albeit not as much as earlier. Work tends to get in the way. Yeah, I know... I can't recall ever having had posts of mine deleted or being at odds with an admin/moderator, so I was quite surprised. I guess what upset me the most was the deletion seemingly without any reason. Had I gotten a private message telling me where I had erred that would have been OK. But this seemed so "random".

In any case I want to thank you all for your replies and also thank you for helping me feel a bit more welcome than a short while ago. This thread can probably be left to die now.

Oh, and thanks for the "thanks". No idea why I would deserve it, though.

    Re: Posts deleted?

I suffered from this a bit too. Too be honest any forum you join your posting rate at the start is going to be higher. This is because unless you joined to ask a specfic question then there will be several posts which already exsist that you may want to comment on. After the initial period your relaying on other posts to be made that you may want to comment on or have something interesting yourself to create a new post .

In truth I cant see any other way to protect the forum from spammers but at the same time if you feel that valid posts are being removed its like being told your not welcome.

Yeah but to be fair, there is a big difference between bullet point posts like "me too" "this" and needless thread resurrection which often get thrown out, and sensible posts. We don't know why the mods deleted some of the posts in this case, but they don't usually blanket kill sensible sounding ones. It may be that the OP had made a number of seemingly "I use AMD too" style posts and that the frequency of such posts also resulted in less innocuous posts as referred to above being swept into the cull. While not abusive they can (depending on the topic + length of thread) contribute little or worse detract from the matter at hand if relating to a tangent rather than the original query. Equally we all do that from time to time. So I guess we can't fully speculate why, it is for the mods to explain, which they've done to the OP, and he sounds happy now so all's well that ends well.

Your raised a justifiable question in a reasonable manner and gave us a chance to respond. :

Well, there are mechanisms - OM (when post count exceeds 15) and there is also the suggestions thread.

Spamming is a problem, and we hope you don't see much, either because we see it, or we respond from a reported post message. Those are particularly valuable because we can't be on the boards 24x7 but we do try to react as quickly as possible. The Mods (and admins0 are not HEXUS staff, and do this in spare time - some have full time jobs, others have other work patterns, so we are available - just not glued to the screen!

The validity of a post sometimes depends on context too, and that does call for judgement. Sometimes we get it wrong - we are not infallible. We also try to notify members why posts have been removed when we can although sometimes that isn't possible.
