    The definition of insanity

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same action again and again, whilst every-time expecting a different result.

To them, I give you the inkjet printhead. Where you wince, press the clean button, watch the ink cartridges level drop, and pray that you get a different result.

I really don't want to have to try and flush by hand an Epson R2880 (expensive!) printer.....

    Re: The definition of insanity

I think the answer is in the title.

Don't buy inkjets. Buy a laser - cost more upfront buy simply better.

And nowhere near as good for photo printing .... noting that the 2880 is a photo printer. And A3, not A4.

Have you seen the cost of a full set of colour toner for a laser printer? If you wince at the cost of inkjet cartridges, you'll weep at the cost of colour laser consumables!

This! We have a Samsung colour multi-function laser for general stuff and an A3 Epson (R3000) inkjet for photo printing. My wife loves printing her graphic samples on the laser before doing finals on the inkjet. On regular paper the laser produces better colour prints but on proper card or ideally photo paper the inkjet is in a completely different league.

One thing you may want to THINK about .... continuous ink systems.

They're a bit controversial, and you DO want to be careful about choice of inks, but they offer a way to significantly reduce ink costs.

Have you tried proper coated laser paper?

I've had one before, the costs, wow, so cheap. But the quality suffered, plus these prints I am wanting to have a long life, so I don't mind splashing out for the better ink that shouldn't fade so fast. I just wish that the think allowed me to just clean the dark cyan head rather than all of em.

But it could be worse, I could have been silly enough to buy an HP!

    Re: The definition of insanity

I gave up printing my own photos for the reasons you gave.

I was using more ink cleaning than printing, so now I just use an online printing service. I might have to wait a couple of days, but that isn't a problem (for me) and much less frustrating, and the ability to print larger sizes.

The quality is as good, if not better, as that I got using a photo inkjet.

No, although I might as an experiment but my laser doesn't do A3 unfortunately which is another limiting factor at the moment.

You would, but you'd also get way more prints per pound. So it depends on how far ahead you look.

    Re: The definition of insanity

Moral of the story, don't leave the photo printing only ink jet printer unplugged. I reckon it's cost £20 in ink.... More than the leccy bill would have been.

As for the laser printer suggestions, I've not seen a laser that can come close to this printer even in just grayscale. It's a £800 ink jet, I would be terrified to see the price of the equivalent laser printer, I mean surely I would want die sublimation anyway...

I had the HP 8450 which produced fantastic prints(prints are fine after around 7 to 8 years on the wall),but after a few years when it had some firmware error,HP support were as helpful as a lead brick to a sinking airship. Never again.

    Re: The definition of insanity

To my eyes dyesubs produce slightly artifical looking colours. But could be the lower end units I've used. They are however colour accurate so it gets good reviews from CMYK purists, but actual subjective image quality, meh. And they makes inkjets look reliable.

Most people slagging off lasers are comparing their output on 80 gsm office grade paper with inkjet 'photo' paper. Stick some 120 gsm premium coated in a midrange laser and you'll get consistently good results. We used to get loads of 110 gsm A4 silk coated from a backstreet litho printer at a knockdown price - much cheaper than official laser paper and worked just as well. On a good day yes an inkjet will be better, but most times inkjets are so flakey it isn't worth the hassle IMO to get that one good print in 50. Not when you can get very nearly as good every time off a midrange laser.

    Re: The definition of insanity

I'm really not comparing it to high volume low cost lasers...

Spec me a nice laser that prints super A3 at affordable prices, which has top quality prints? I'm not aware of anything under two grand. Let alone something which comes up close to the R2880. It would be interesting to see if things have moved a bit.

Whilst we're talking printers, I've always had a soft spot for Phasers, I made pocket money fixing them up whilst at uni, they did drink endless amounts of wax, but for text, on low price paper, it was lovely, so long as you never folded it. I even got a comment once from a lecturer that my assignment was really well presented, git still marked me down for spelling (they weren't meant to do that to dyslexics on technical assignments).

Out of interest how is black and white printing on the newer Epsons?? Can you get dedicated greyscale cartridges for them??
