    aaaaaargh!!

I want to smash my computer into tiny pieces!
    its getting to me.

last week my new BB modem arrived, so excitedly I began to boot it up and install the supplied software. BUT halfway through its 'new hardware found, locate driver' thingy [once it had been shown the driver to go for], it halts. just stops loading the driver and just stalls.
I reset to go again, uninstalled and reset, then attempted a reinstall...but to no avail. same thing happened again, it gets about halfway through getting the right driver into itself and then it freezes. so I reset and uninstall...

...i tried a couple of times but realised it was just going round in circles. no joy. so, pissed off cause I knew it would mean a call to a £1/min technical unsupport line, i uninstalled what i had got on there and restarted to finish it off. then I shut down and went to bed.

next day I turned on and - CANNOT LOAD WINDOWS FOLLOWING FILES MISSING OR DAMAGED:

    WTF!?

so it seems that the Himem, dblbuff and ifshlp.sys files have strangely been removed from my windows directory. to top it all so is the Win.com file...[its win98]. looks like the sodding modem program had caused my computer to go on strike and spit out various crucial files in the process.

thanks to some helpful gents (geeks?!) in the hexus help forum [ ] I got the *.sys files back into their homes by extracting them from the cd...but the win.com file is buggering me around. I extract the win.cnf file from the cd with the intention of a simple renaming to win.com and job done...NOoooo. when I renamed it, it disappeared! yup, thats right, dir/p command came up blank. when I went through the same process of extracting to the correct folder and renaming the .cnf file to a .com I got 'ERROR RENAMING FILE: A FILE OF THAT NAME ALREADY EXISTS'
    WTF?
ok then where you smart arse? its not in this directory [sure enough dir/p failed to show a win.com file] but despite my efforts I still can't rename the .cnf file, and I'm about ready to throw the damn thing out of the window...!

has anyone seen the end of my tether? i appear to have lost that as well

insert win XP - linux or what ever just so long as it aint win 98 and troubles are over

windows 98 really really sucks when trying to use it with bb modems and new items alike hence the reason it has been confined to the bin of crappy prehistoric os's never to return (hopefully)

yeah well this computer is an old knock off since my last 3...count 'em, died horrible deaths. all on XP. so i'm waiting for a bit more dosh to get a new comp through building it up myself, might take a while but at least I'll have one that works how I want it to.
at least win98 works for what I need, emails, MSOffice etc.

from your first post id gathered that aint the case anymore

wouldnt linux be a better choice? ,not a linux user my self but im fairly sure that there are some free versions knocking about which should be fine for emails and alike

or if you have win 2k that would be a better choice
