Thumbs up LAF - A Very Worthy Cause

You may have seen celebrities, footballers and/or friends wearing these yellow wristbands recently

    They look like this:

Do you know what they are? This thread I hope will answer that question.

Lance Armstrong is a cancer survivor. He came very close to death 6 years ago, but he fought the disease and since gone on to lead a normal healthy life. Not only this, he has won the world's hardest sporting event, the Tour de France a record breaking 6 times.

He is an inspirational figure, and shows what can be done with hard work and support. He has set up the Lance Armstrong Foundation to help those 10 million other cancer sufferers around the world. He has written two books I urge you to read, as they give you an insight into what goes on in order to overcome the disease.

Cancer is a subject on a lot of our minds and I ask the members of Hexus to purchase these wristbands to support the amazing work that LAF does. Due to the immense worldwide demand there is a shortage of them so it will take 3-5 weeks to receive yours but it will be worth the wait. Please do not buy them from eBay as these people are only doing this to make money. Although the sellers say they will donate some of the money you pay to the LAF I highly doubt this is the case. You have to buy them in packs of 10 minimum, so I recommend getting some like minded friends and putting in an order and being patient. I am going to tell my friends about them and what they stand for and ask them to donate money to the LAF in exchange for a wristband.

So please, Hexus WEAR YELLOW and give generously

Sorry just one thing to question on this, but i don't but while i strongly agree with helping cancer causes as this is generally a UK forum i'd suggest people who are interesting in supporting cancer charities that they do so with a different choice, like breakthrough or the mc millans foundation. The LAF funds annual report clearly shows that all bar one instance of its funds went on US only projects.

Its certainly a worthwhile cause raising awareness and trying to get people to support this, but all i'd ask is that people spend the money on getting the Uk cancer suffers support rather than the US ones first off.

Then maybe our friends and families won't have to go through things like losing relatives like some of us have.

    Thanks

Yep i agree. I have family in both the US and here so will support both UK and foreign charities as much as possible. As you say, the greater the awareness, the more can be done

i know loads of ppl who wear these things - you can order them from the UK i think, if you have a mastercard, etc

anyway at the end of the day if they make an anti cancer drug, with the help of your cash, whether it be america or brazil - im sure itll work its way over here, and work its magic

Controversion Opinion: Look away now if moderately easily offended.

Cancer is over funded because it is a western disease that affects rich, western people. Other diseases such as Malaria kill far more people annually but get less funding. But why should I donate money to Malarial research, I'm never going to catch it am I. But if you're western, rich, scared of dying and a smoker, Cancer research is a nice way of getting some charitable feel-good factor whilst probably getting something back as well.

I'm not saying we shouldn't give money to cancer charities, we should, but don't forget the other diseases and charities as well.

<puts on pimp hat> www.find-a-drug.org is a way anyone with a computer can fight cancer AND a load of other serious diseases like malaria and AIDS. It'll only cost you the electricity that your computer uses while crunching</pimp>.

Sorry you think so, admittedly Malaria is pretty well funded too, but Cancer research is very well funded. Would you care to elaborate?

You think cancer charities do well? What about the RSPCA? Put a cute kitten in a bucket of water and watch the money rollin! Ridiculous. Cancer research is a fine thing to give money to, because as sure as hell you can't get any decent research money from the government! And relax....
