We communicate so much online these days anyway, I really don't see the issue with using a site to facilitate a date. In fact, the more I think about it, the more certain I am that if I was single, I'd happily use them.
It's stigma. Dating sites are often seen as 'artificial' ways to meet people used by those who are no good at meeting people 'the right/normal way'. This gives the idea that people who use dating sites are deficient/inadequate and/or 'desperate'.

Many years ago at a friends birthday party, we sat next to each other and didn't speak (I wasn't single at the time). Then again a couple of years later at a BBQ at the house where she lived, again we didn't speak. Then almost 2 years ago we said hi at another birthday party. Then I was out with mutual friends during the day and invited myself to her flat-warming in the evening. 3 dates later and the rest is a shorter history...

For me it was partly my job, I'm a web developer so people kind of just assume that's the "kind of thing I do".

I would recommend them though, you can filter out a lot that you can't filter out in a dark bar. The Mrs says there were a LOT of creeps on there, not so much the other way round.
