    Grooming Forum?

At the risk of sounding all girly - I've noticed there isn't a grooming section in the forums.

Every so often a need or interest arises where I want to discuss subjects such as safety and straight razor shaving, other shaving products, and even barber shop/hair dressing subjects. Might be an idea for a sub-section maybe?

(Even cave-dwelling IT trolls need to learn about the best rocks for scrapping off leeches)

And - while I'm at it. I'm due to get my hair cut tomorrow. Any guys with longer hair have trouble getting hairdressers/barbers to understand what layering is? Been to about 8 hairdressers/barbers in Gibraltar and never been completely satisfied (even when armed with photos).

    Re: Grooming Forum?

I once went to the hairdressers and at the end they explained that they had layered it. I nodded, as you do, and went home.

I then spent the whole of the following day asking all of the girls in my class one by one to explain what on earth the hairdresser had been on about. If I did understand, I don't remember it.

So I'm probably not the best person to advise on that.

But it was a good chat up line.

Not sure a 'grooming' forum would look too good on the internet..

    Re: Grooming Forum?

Well, we'll see what 'demand' there is, but we only recently finished consolidating sub-forums to reduce the clutter, and as I don't remember ever being asked for that before, I wouldn't think it likely.

As for me, I get my hair cut every few months when a (hairdresser) friend does the wife's, and I trim the beard about once a week. It takes about 15 mins 3 times a year for the hair, and 2 mins at a time for the beard. Job done. Forum for it? Not for me.

    Re: Grooming Forum?

I do my own hair, number one and zuzz the lot off every two months. MUCH cheaper than a hairdresser.

Shaving ? When it itches Mach three blades, Gillette Fusion Sensitive gel. Brut.

    Done.
    Cheers, David

    Re: Grooming Forum?

Alright, alright. Skinheads the lot of you!

Just to clarify - when I say 'grooming' I don't just mean haircuts. The morning/evening routines are something all...wait, most?... of us go through. Surely there's some discussion to be had on the products and routines involved? Maybe not.

    Shaving topics: Wet/Dry; Disposable/Cartridge/Safety/Straight; Pre-shave - Hot water/towel/Foam/Soap/Oil; Aftershave - Hotwater/Cold/Towel/Nothing; Products?; Brush?

Deodorant - Anti-perspirant/Deodorant - there was a bit of a debate for a while about the wisdom of stopping your body from sweating. Personally I stick to deodorant only, but it limits my choice drastically. Happily, I've found that Old Spice are deodorant only and work very well. Surprisingly, though, not so much choice for the wife in the deo-only department. New options always welcome.

Personally, shaving-wise, I've found myself going round in circles a bit without ever being satisfied. For a while now I've sported a beard but it's not long, I keep it closely trimmed. For that I use an electric beard-trimmer. For the neck and face I use disposable razors, and that's what's annoying. I find shave quality poor but on the other hand the price of replacement cartridges for the 'hi-tech' razors is exorbitant. I'm tempted to buy online an 'old-fashioned' safety razor but haven't yet jumped in. Every now and then I've even considered going for a cut-throat but a realistic look at the prep and maintenance time involved has put me off so far.

On the prep-side, what I have found that I like, and works best, it to forego shaving cream in a can and buy shaving soap and use a brush. Can re-apply the lather often and easily. With the foam I'd go through a can far too quickly. Tried shaving oils but not convinced by them.

As for hair, my grows quite quickly. I've often gone short but it then means regular cuts unless I want to look like Lloyd from dumb and dumber. I tend to prefer to leave it longer not only because in the end I prefer the look but it also lets me get away with fewer trips to the hairdressers. It was fine when I was in the USA, there were some solid hairdressers there who did an excellent job. Over here in Gibraltar, despite there being more hair places than you can shake a stick at, if you're a guy who doesn't have straight back and sides or something that can be done with a trimmer, I've not seen much success.

Re - 'Grooming'. Not sure where you're all off to on the internet but it looks like there's another perfectly good word hijacked. Barber forum?

I guess keep trying hair dressers until you find one that cut the hair the way you want it. That's what I do whenever I move to a new place. Try a few hair salons (preferably based on recommendations), try different stylists at said salon, and stick to one (or maybe two stylists, in case you want a hair cut the day the other isn't in, or your preferred stylist leave the workplace), then stick with them. That said, I am surprised that after 8 hairdressers you haven't found one that meet your requirements.. or know what layering is.
