Holidays, holidays

So, Summer is round the corner, and traditionally the time people go away for their hols. But some of the better deals and cheaper flights can be had out of that season.

I have just come back from a scuba diving trip on a Red Sea liveaboarb (boat) which was great fun, but fairly physical, with up to four dives a day.

As a contrast, I am writing this from a chalet in the Swiss Alps.

But what do the good people of HEXUS do for their hols? Action or relaxing on a beach? Winter or Summer? And what have you got planned for this year?

According to my Steam stats, better than 90% of my games have not seen any action so I have that to look forward to. Like I did the year before that. And the year before that. Come to think about it, the year before that too and...

Im not a great one for Beach type hols, nor "partying", Sally and I prefer the "City Break" sort of thing.

York, Chester, Oxford, Cambridge, historical stuff. When we have been abroad, it's been to my parents place in France, Charante area, or Malta which was where we had our honeymoon. Next main hols is planned to be Barcelona.

For the last 7 years I've been doing 4-6 month IT contracts in the UK and then going off into the world for 6+ months so its not so much Holidays, more lifestyle

12 months Oz - IT contract, Banana farm, lots of living like a beach bum.
5 months NZ - Kiwi Fruit packing shed, more beach bum.
7 months London to Kuala Lumpur without flying - no work except a couple weeks teaching English in China, lots of exploring.
7 months on Roatan as a PADI divemaster / instructor. Was mainly work but all good fun!
7 months in Canada - failing to get IT job and end up as a Lifty at a ski resort, learning to Ski and Snowboard while living with some awesome people.

That has been on hold for the last 13 months as I got an extended contract I couldn't turn down so I've been doing more long weekends as I can. Snowboarding in Bulgaria last feb, Snowboarding Scotland in March, Dublin for tourist and drinking last month, Rome next weekend.

Big plans for 14-18 months out of the country when this current contract ends

I'm just back from a week in New York City. It was a fairly busy holiday so next up is a couple of weeks in Turkey in September where our days will mostly consist of relaxing on the beach with a book and cold drink.

We seem to alternate our holidays, 1 will be a bit busy and the next will be chilled out. We like to have at least 2 holidays a year, 1 of a week, 1 of 2 weeks plus a city break later in the year.

Planning a little bike trip this summer....

Just back from a week in vegas then off to dominican in summer. SWMBO is a big fan of beach stuff, and I'm happy stretched out reading. Tend to try and get a week somewhere more activity based elsewhere if poss though.

Pre child: All incs in Jamaica or Mexico, part beach, part activity. Trips to Oz. Found that all inclusives in the Caribbean, although more expensive, are much better value than European ones.

Post Child: Short breaks in the UK, seeing family etc. A lot less boozy.

Well 7th to the 21nd I'm off to central France for 2 weeks that just happens to have the worlds greatest motor race in the middle of it, This will be the 5th year on the trot I've done it. Ive had a couple of trips to Romania recently too, sooo wanna drive the Transfragarasan

Tenerife with a bunch of pool players every February. Play the ex pats
Currently spending a week with Family in Houston,TX by way of NYC and Newark.
At Christmas will be in Belgium at the trenches celebrating the centenary anniversary of the football game that stopped the war.

Next year, hoping to go somewhere different ish, not sure where.

Black Sea shore in Bulgaria in 3 weeks. Can't wait. I guess I have enough of the lovely Scottish weather

Booked our trip to Edinburgh, thanks to a bit of bargin hunting got the accomodation down to £35 a night 300 yards from the train station, and train tickets down to £110 return for 2 of us (+£27 for a year's 2-Together railcard)

Looking forward to it, chance to get out, do a bit of shopping, sight-seeing and whisky drinking. Didn't fancy lying around on a beach, and anything more actiony like hiking would drive my partner crazy!

When you have just bought a new house like me. No chance for holiday this year. Might be lucky to get a camping trip in but really depends on money. Before the kids it was Dominican Republic for the wife and I. Very good holiday it was too.

Just back from MotoGP in Jerez then a week of mooching about round the sherry/brandy bodegas and some coast walks and stuff. Bit lazier than usual but Andalucia is just too hot to do much after March, and water was too cold to go kayaking / scuba and stuff like that yet without proper kit. Do fancy learning to dive though as snorkelling near san Jose Spain last year was superb.

Plan to go to Vancouver Island in Sept to do some bear and whale watching when salmon are migrating. Were there before but were too early in the season to see much other than a few brown bears at the side fo the road. Might hire motorbike in Vancouver but makes things difficult with wife/luggage transportation so needs thought through if we do that. Floatplane might be the answer to get her up there.
