Rubicon mango juice multipacks now feature 200ml juice packets rather than 388ml. That's almost half the size!

Can't say I noticed any major changes to my usual products over the past years, but it's definitely something that has occurred. Can't say I'm surprised given the situation. How much has Freddos gone up in the past 5 years

Multipack tuna cans seem to have shrunk from 185g to 160g and companies like Prince are dubious enough to fill half of that 160g can with oil or water!

They probably kept the same sized can and just reduced the amount of tuna, hence more oil/water to maintain the fill level. You're paying for a given mass of tuna, not for a given volume, so it doesn't really matter how full the can is as long as you get the amount of tuna listed on the side.

When buying tuna in a can you need to work out the £ to drained weight ratio, as well as look at the amount of protein. The manufacturer only has to achieve what it says on the label and they all have varying drained weights. Even then there are ways to ensure that more water stays in after draining than normal.

John West tuna cans used to be 185g, then they became 160g and now they are 145g!!!
    We continue becoming poorer.

Anyone still remember BOGOF? Apparently, these were stopped because we wasted food. The majority of us didn't and merely stocked up!

I'm still not really clear on why this all bothers you so much - it's only inflation.

And it's not as if there isn't competition in the groceries sector - right now it's more competitive than it has been in years!

Radox handwash bottles had a shape change and with that 50ml was somehow lost
Whatever own brand handwashes that were still around for 60p mark are now around the Quid mark
Coke cans have again jumped in price and are now 71p

I like how the rest of the UK is experiencing around 0% inflation but there's this little pocket just focused on oilsheikh

If it's any consolation, my local supermarket prices have been decreasing.

Mixed bag, in my experience. Some prices up, some down. Some static, which I guess is a victory for our pockets if we were expecting increases.

I do agree with OilSheikh about magical shrinking products, though. Multi-packs of things like crisps or chocolate bars seem to be among the worst. And if you use pound-type shops, watch them like a hawk watching a mouse. Prices might be fixed, but net weights, or number of items in packs, etc, sure aren't. Which, of course, will catch out, and deceive, the unwary. And that, I assume, was the objective. It is, effectively, hidden inflation.

Edit - I'm forever telling the wife, don't concentrate on price per pack, check price per item, or price per gram.

I am a huge fan of Horlicks and I have noticed that this has jumped in price as well. £3.66 ! Used to be around £2!

Re: Recessions' impact on supermarket products

Since the weakening of the yen price of certain items have increased a lot. Price of apples at my local supermarket have literally doubled in the past year, from 99 yen to 199 yen. Yes, a single apple costs more than a quid. And now that I think of it, I am not sure how it makes sense. Those are locally produced goods, not import goods (which understandably have increased in price). At any rate, I don't think "recession" is to be blamed, but given that the size of the goods over here are already quite small in the first place compared to the West, seeing things get even smaller is a bit annoying.

Just noticed this - don't forget that a year ago you also mentioned own brand handwash was a quid, so they've not gone up this year

Japan's long been trying to get inflation going so there could be all sorts of reasons. Even with non-imported goods the costs up the chain increase because somewhere there will be some interaction with the outside world, who can now offer a better price for the same product/farming equipment/raw material etc.

Glad I don't drink Coke, but if that is your tipple, you'll find out that dental fees have gone up too!
