CB radios you need a licese for. Fill in form at post office give them cash and they give you the license. At least I think thats still the case.

HAM radios I think you need to do a course to get the license.

Scanners we can all own and treasure. Last time I used one it could happily pick up the police band and it came from maplins. Think its one of those laws where you can own it but are not allowed to use it for certain things. Just found a website with all the frequencys listed.

Used to run about 25 feet of copper wire stripped from the core of 30 amp cable for an aerial, make sure you get hold of a SWR (Standing Wave Reflection) Meter to tune things in otherwise you could bounce the signal straight back down the coax and blow your rig.

If you're going car mounted, stick the aerial in the middle of the car for the best signal distribution and pick up.

For a home kit, a big pole as mentioned earlier is good but people get funny about it. I used to run mine up the rafters in the roof. You can get a BIG aerial going that way. Use the SWR meter and a pair of pliers to trim the wire to reduce the feedbalc to a minimum. Stick an ordinary TV signal booster on it and you can broadcast halfway across the country with no problems. You need a good quality rig for this though or your signal may 'bleed' onto other channels and annoy other users.

AFAIK fm rigs are legal but AM aren't, may have change since I was on there. I remember when the legalised CB with licensing and all that and the air filled up with the radio equivalent of spammers. Most peeps stayed on AM as you couldn't buy those rigs very easily back then, we left the FM to the idiots.
