    Lightbulb computer terminology

I was talking to a guy in work about upgrading his PC with new memory, and with all the terminology and acronyms around, it got kinda confusing, DDR PC4700 and a7x8nvxstataewifikn8 motherboards and all that.

and he turned around and said, it would be so much simpler if they used names. Like Albert and Cecil.

"I'd like to buy some more memory please"
    "what motherboard do you have"
    "its a Cecil"
"ahh here's two sticks of Eric"

I thought it was pure genius

You'd sound like a right idiot, especially if theres someone called that name working there, might think your up to something slightly weird

Once you know all the names, it's not very confusing (although you do sound geeky if you talk about it in public). Besides, think how quickly you'd run out of sensible names if you had to come up with a new one for each motherboard/RAM type/whatever.Thinking about it, it would probably make things harder!

Or perhaps that could use a few numbers and letters to identify individual motherboards, preceded by the name of the company that manufacturers them, followed by any other vital information, like say... the Asus A8V rev2.0

    Hang on!

LOL I agree the naming conventions LOOK hard but if you look at the one Vaul has given as an example its easy when you know why they are named that way.

    i.e ASUS A8V - A = Amd 8=AMD K8 V=Via Chipset

Its mainly the memory as you have shown thats a royal PITA as the PC number is the "bandwidth" available to the system i.e PC3200 is roughly 3200 Mb/s ( its a little more actually when sandra is ran ) and this is what confuse most customers I deal with as well.
