Too soon?
Maybe. I'd rather it was left till nearer December, or December itself.
Still, these ads are out there, they've stirred up some emotional responses, so I took a gander this morning.
Any thoughts?

I have to say I came away happier with those than I thought. Despite the fact that they are both, obviously, commercial outfits, I think the message of both was more than just fluff and glitz and might serve as a genuine reminder of the human side of things. A little less focus on the gifts and more focus on the people is a great thing.
I'm happy, for now, to avoid any tendency towards cynicism and just enjoy that message. They might profit from it, but it's still real and a good reminder.
(Although I can understand why some might feel that Sainsbury's use of war and heroism is taking it a bit far)

Record all my TV so I can fast forward past ads. That people make a point of watching them? Nice testament to there being craft in it.
(Having said that, still don't watch them.)

This'll be off that strange new-fangled television thing all the kids are talking about, won't it?
It'll never catch on
Joking aside though (difficult, since I don't watch broadcast TV), IMNSHO it's way too early for Christmas advertising. But the #montythepenguin adverts have been impressive, not for the advert (I haven't seen it, nor have I yet watched the youtube vid posted above) but for the social media buzz it's generated: without seeing the advert or even knowing what it was for I was aware of #montythepenguin due to the social media presence. Now *that's* good advertising....
At first whiff of a John Lewis ad (and you can spot them coming a mile off thankfully) I'm off tbh, before the 6 bags of tate and lyle in one mug of tea effect hits.
I will watch the Sainsbury's ad but gut feeling says.. hmm, no thanks..
I think they should ban Xmas advertising until December 1st or at least a full month (30 days?) before Xmas. When you start seeing Xmas adverts popping a week before Halloween(!) you know things have gone way too far..
Corrected for you.
I agree with wasabi, and I also record all TV (except, perhaps, some BBC programming) so as to skip any and all ads. I have no interest in anything advertisers have to say, and absolutely not in the middle of a programme I'm trying to watch, 'cos it ruins the prog for me.
Haven't seen the sainsbury's ad yet, and cant atm cos I am at work. However as I will be spending Christmas in Ypres, celebrating the truce (and recreating the football match), I will watch it and offer an opinion later.
The BBC doesn't show ads... And on the rare occasions when I am driven to ITV, advert breaks are times to make drink, have a pee, check email/HEXUS etc

Which is why I watch some BBC progs without recording first. Though, strictly speaking, they do show ad's. Just not within progs, just between them, and not for commercial products but for their own services and progs. That, I can cope with, personally, but constant interruptions during a prog drives me berserk .... and to never watch such progs/channels without recording, then ad-skipping.
I liked the Sainsbury's ad.
