    Slenderman - W T H??

Until 20 minutes ago....I knew nothing about this fictional creepy character....which is...frankly a bit weak

But it turns out it might have a bearing on impressionable teenagers

    And it's not pretty reading!

You'll find it on the news sites. . ..bbc included
    .
And a Wikipedia entry on slenderman himself...itself

What is wrong with people and their inability to see truth from sure invention? When I was 12 I'd not have got together with my mate and convinced some other 12 year old to come walking with me so I could stab them repeatedly to become known to some fictional character invented only 5 years ago by a cartoonist!

    / Slaps head for clarity

Honestly......what are the parents doing? Just letting their kids believe everything they read in every place everywhere?

Note to self- keep own child and his friends in the
    Real world where possible!

Is it any different to other horror fiction? Be it film, literature, website, or game. People have been doing evil stuff and blaming it on the voices or the devil for as long as records go back, maybe the group element of websites adds another layer, but reading horror at a book club, or swapping ghost stories while camping can be just as immersive.

    Re: Slenderman - W T H??

I shall point out, probably at some risk, that its nothing new.

According to the BBC report, I quote

Following their arrest they told investigators about their belief in paranormal figure Slenderman and their desire to become his "proxies" by killing to demonstrate their loyalty, police said.
Seems very akin to several centuries of religious craziness.

And, reading wikipedia the same kid also claimed to have conversations with Voldemort and one of the TMNT. To paraphrase the meme. Crazies be Crazy.

    Re: Slenderman - W T H??

Picture primitive hunter-gatherer man, searching for some snacks on the savannah. He sees movement in the grass, is it the wind? Or does he imagine a lion seeking a snack of his own? An imagination, and belief in the supernatural is a strong survival trait. Add some confirmation bias, and you have the origins of religion and all other supernatural belief.

So what's wrong with people? It's hard to say that anything is. We may have reached the point of having the intellectual ability to override our evolutionary instincts, but those instincts remain. The draw is still there, and while religions are falling to the advance of knowledge, people are still drawn to the supernatural, from tarot to horoscopes and alternative medicine.

In defence of Slenderman, he didn't only spawn horribleness.

He also spawned total garbage, like Slendertubbies.

Trouble is, every time I hear his name, I think he's trying to sell another brand of sugar-substitute....

    (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/) (\___/)
    (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=)
    (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(")

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!

    Re: Slenderman - W T H??

My kids made me play Senderman a few years ago, it is a creepy game.... And I can see what you are saying Zac, I suppose how the kids respond to these things are dependant on lots of things, environmental factors, maybe? social factors? probably? or maybe they are just evil little shisters looking for excuses. People nowadays need to seem to want reasons behind others actions, and can't really accept it for what it is. Some people, are who they are and that is that.

I think to feel a little fear is heathy, an innate feeling powered by instinct, coupled with problem solving. It moulds us into well rounded individuals. And in a gaming environment it allows exploration of fear in a controlled environment

Is there a game of it? It seems like the usual d&d is evil type hysteria to me, which I'd agree is based primarily on the someone else's fault approach to parenting (and personal responsibility generally) which seems to be pretty common.

I suppose it all stems from this 'where there is blame there is a claim' culture...
