have to ask my dad if he still has his first cellnet phone - it had a battery box and you carried it like a briefcase!
i wonder if that creme one is real or just a prop
Remember in the early 90s when sales reps started getting them fitted in their cars. 'Car phone' - who'd have thunk that name would stick around?
The whole line up is rendered, but I think they're models of actual phones (or near enough, anyway)
Not just in the early 90s, in the 80s too - I remember one day my step-dad's car broke down on the way to work and a schoolmate's dad drove past taking him to school - he stopped to offer me a lift, and spent most of the journey ostentatiously messing around with his car phone, like I was meant to be impressed or something. I guess they made more sense in cars back then since they could be hooked up to the car battery rather than needing heavy internal cells.
Wow 30 years and I still don't get signal at my house...

We have some of the 1st retail mobile phones in our office. Just for a laugh I suggested we set up a trial test analogue network to see if they still worked the other day, (some still power up). My suggestion wasn't greeted with hoots of derision but it was thought that most of the network equipment would too much trouble to recommission.![]()
