    Smile Just a little Wonder....

... How many of you girlys here work/study in the IT industry?

If you do, giz-us a little bit of info!

Just so i can start the ball rolling... I'm a final year BEng Internet Engineering student, with aspirations to become a web developer. I love this industry! (nothing to do with the 25-1 male-female ratio in our engineering modules, shame only about 10% are even worth going near!)

    Thanks!

OT but I am surprised at that. Most of the engineering/computers courses over here have at least a 1:1 male-female ratio and more females in a lot of cases.

Nope Im a boring Accountant, but Ive really got an interest in IT though I dont really know alot about it.
Im thinking that as I become qualified I will probably head towards the systems side of things rather than the normal boring accounts type stuff. Still got a few years of study ahead of me tho.

Looking around the office and not a girly in sight. Though I'm in network engineering and that seems to be a predominantly male preserve. I have no idea why but I know of very few female network engineers and have only ever worked with 1. Not so much desktop or software as network devices. Routing, switching, hardware firewalling etc. The bit's in the middle that allow you all to use the net

RVF500, that sounds good I really enjoy networking etc! I wish I could start working/studying with what I want but I have 1 year left, have to stand that first.

If you want to go that route moonshade then log on to cisco.com and go to the learning and events tab. From there follow the career certifications links. These certifications are invaluable if you want to persue a career in network engineering. These certification paths are courses that you can follow after you graduate. Ideally after gaining an entry level position in an IT department/company or service provider.

The associate level is the start point and you cannot take a professional level certification without holding an associate certificate first. All certifications are valid for 3 years after which you must recertify. It keeps the pool rich and everyone stays current.

However, you do not need to hold any of the above certificates to attempt the CCIE (expert level). you do however have to sit a written entrance exam after which you have 18 months in which to take the laboratory exam. Which is an 8 hour practical exam and must be recertified every 2 years. It is recommended that you do not attempt the CCIE until you have at least 3 years practical experience. I'm sitting my CCIE written next month and will be attempting the lab in the summer.

None of this is mandatory but these are benchmark certifications recognised worldwide. In many cases prospective job applicants won't even get an interview unless they hold the elevant level of certification for the position.

I've already been visiting cisco.com I really love it. I've been watching folks working with networking and similar. Also been reading alot cisco materials actually .

I was thinking reading about Networking at uni. Then you can get certifications and stuff through school. I know they're valid for 3 years. I've been reading and checking the first "level" CCNA.

Well I'll see how things will work out later, I won't be able to get into uni for awhile..at least 1½ year at least.

    Thanks for the info. anyway!

In my IT Dept of 10 people, there is only 1 woman.
And she's only the second woman techie I've known since i started working in IT, which is now about five years.

The other was a systems tester (boo hiss!) who was married to a guy i worked with

No probs tigg and moon. If you have any questions ask away. Can't guarantee I can answer but I'm pretty sure I'll know where to look for the answer.

I just left a project in MK, small world.
