    VPNs - recommendations?

    Hi,
We're off to Oz in March with the kids and I'm looking for a VPN which will allow us to view UK iPlayer and Netflix. I'll have a laptop, and a Western Digital set top box and an Internet connection. Does anyone have a recommended VPN/guide? I've never looked into this before, and don't want to spend time on holiday experimenting.

    Ta.

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

Ive used SlickVPN, seems to work well.

Can use PPTP, OpenVPN or their own SlickVPN software to make connections.

I've tried it on an iPad and Win8 laptop, but probably worth trying it to make sure you can access the services you want.

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

Who's talking about Warez/Piracy? I'm a UK national, I pay for UK Netflix and I pay for a TV license. I want the kids to be able to get an occasional fix of Power Rangers whilst we're in the Oz on holiday. I'm not aware I'm breaking any rules?

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

Sadly, you are not allowed to do this. Breaks the licencing terms of Iplayer/netflix/etc.

What next, a hexus 'keygen' forum?

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

Does it? I thought netflix clarified that it didn't recently, after the fake story they were clamping down on it.

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

I did this whilst on holiday in Norway using TunnelBear (cos it was free - plus extra GB for tweeting on a throw away account)

Just stop the VPN when the stream starts so you don't use the VPN bandwidth (this didn't work on a few occassions but I can't remember the details)

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

I use VPN Unlimited due to a stupidly good deal meant I didn't mind if it was rubbish, however it works really well....except i cannot access Hexus Forums when using it as it say my ip address is banned.

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

Cyberghost has a free option: http://www.cyberghostvpn.com/
If you don't mind paying, Private Internet Access has a one month option for less than £5 (Otherwise the ~£27 annual subscription is one of the cheapest out there AFAIK). I use them regularly and would say their speeds tend to be around 2MBps (bytes not bits), which does most things competently and they allow multiple devices. So you can hook up a couple laptops and phones if you wanted (like say if you were on coffee shop wifi). It works with iPlayer in my experience. https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/

What router do you have? Does it have the option to setup your own VPN?

That is always a risk. VPN services most likely operate from fixed IP addresses, so "suspicious" usage could get blocked.

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

@Dooms, didn't even consider that. That could work.

@abaxas & @mycarsavw - looks like you can view downloaded content from iPlayer, just not connect to iPlayer itself. Oh well...

    Thanks everyone....

    Re: VPNs - recommendations?

    +1 for privateinternetaccess.com

I used this article for selecting which service to use

    http://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-se...dition-140315/

Careful as the internet speeds in Aus can be terrible that it's actually hard to watch anything without constant buffering
