I made this guide a couple years ago but a chunk of it is out of date now and I haven't had enough spare time to start the project again.

    What are you looking for?

Just a box to play local media? Want to stream off netflix etc? Want to be able to stream to other devices (PLEX)? download stuff? storage as well? steambox? emulators? list goes on and on from a PC connected to TV

Do you have any idea just how much storage you want to put in it?

Re: Daft question time cos i'm old !

At this point it comes down to how much you want to spend I guess.

The main question is does the WD Live box stream 1080p without being transcoded first? If it does then you can do this super cheap as a NAS solution that will also download for you can be pretty low powered. If it needs transcoding via PLEX then things need a bit more power.

As I explained in the guide I linked above I love my MicroServer for NAS/HTPC Server and you can get the new one for £144 which would tick all the boxes. You just need to install an OS and set things up.

As for what OS to go for there are plenty of options. Want an easy thing of things? Go Windows. Want something more dedicated you can use something like FreeNAS, unRaid, Openfiler, XPEnology which all have plugins that will do what you want but involve a lot more setup.
