Why are horses allowed to poop on roads and the owner now have to clear it up?

    Hey people,
Bit of a ranty post. I went for a run last night and part of my route goes along a cycle path. Part way along the path was a huge pile of Horse Manure which meant I had to go offline. As a dog owner If I where to let my dogs dump and leave it I'd get a £1000 fine whilst it seems if I owned a horse and let it leave a mountain of poop nothing would happen.

Why is this? Is there a valid reason why horse owners get away with leaving steaming piles of crap ?

On foot I can at least get around it by going offroad but if I'm out on my road bike putting in some effort then a loads across the path is going to make things interesting to say the least.

    /rant

Roads have been around alot longer than cars have

Also, remember that every car with and internal combustion engine poos itself wherever it goes.

Could it be that horses only eat grass and straw and that, so their excrement doesn't harbour the same dangers as dogs' doings?

Basically yes - manure is hardly a health hazard, and indeed, is quite useful stuff.

It's not without its dangers though. Although it's useful as a garden fertilizer, you shouldn't put it on any crops (like lettuce, for example), which is usually eaten uncooked. There have been plenty of cases of people getting E coli poisoning in this way...

I thought the main reason for dog poo having to picked up was due to it being a form of littering?

Re: Why are horses allowed to poop on roads and the owner now have to clear it up?

Interesting (or not!) fact that when most of the motive power in towns was horse drawn, particularly London, dealing with horse droppings was a major problem. Horse manure is a valuable fertiliser though and the droppings were collected and transported out to the country where it was used to improve crop yields, and those crops were transported back to the towns. Oxfordshire was one particular area.

Horses can harbour tetanus, and the virus is excreted in manure. If that gets into a cut, tetanus can develop in humans, and there is, or was, a higher incidence of tetanus in Oxfordshire and the Home Counties because of that.

(Can't remember when I learned that, or its veracity, but seems plausible)

But in general, the excrement from omnivores tends to have a higher health risk than excrement from herbivores. Dog and cat excrement can carry parasites that are harmful to humans, causing blindness, and other neurological effects.

For the same reason you can ride a horse and trap on a national speed limit dual carriageway leading to the death of the horse, rider and serious injuries all round for the rest of the parties involved in two other vehicles....

Because the horse and pony set make the rules.

Yes, in case you hadn't guessed already I am feeling rather bitter this afternoon.

That's the same reason that I've heard before and the one that makes most sense. Some cities do prohibit horse mess and Prague is one such example.

I'd more question why a runner is complaining about horse mess on a cycle path which by it's name neither a horse or a runner should be using

Re: Why are horses allowed to poop on roads and the owner now have to clear it up?

Horse manure is a serious nuisance on the roads for a motorcycle, not only dangerous on a bend but any splashes on aluminum cases if not washed off soon, then the acids etch the casings and your nice new bike is spoilt.
2nd computer gigabyte P965ds3p, 7770 E2140@2.9ghz, corsair HX520 6 years stable, replaced now with E8400@3.9ghz and will overclock more when I'm bored.

Any kind of poop on a path or road is a bit of a disaster if you're a wheelchair user...especially if you don't notice it on your tyres before going into your house...

Surely if you can afford a horse, you can afford a peasant to follow you around picking the stuff up? Heck, if needs be, you don't even have to pay them as they will earn their wages from the manure they sell - I'm sure there will be hordes of waifs, rascals, rapscallions and musical cast members stuffing your horse with grass as they await the valuable end product...

Brings a whole new meaning to, "Please sir, I want some more"!!

It's fine! I'd much rather drive through manure than many other substances. It doesn't smell bad (or is that my country upbringing coming out?), is easy to wash off etc.

Frankly it's unusual NOT to run through it on some of the lanes I'm used to driving.
