    Interesting Dilemma

I was looking at my googlemail account today and noticed that there were some emails from an online retailer where an account had been created and an order placed using my email address.

The bizarre thing is that the person actually has the same name as me and as such I can see where the confusion happened.

I'm not worried that it is someone pretending to be me as the order information had name, address, mobile and landline number and after checking public records there is someone with the same name as me (although didn't middle name) living at that address.

The dilemma is what do I do about this? Do I contact the person to tell them of their mistake as I have access to his online account, personal information and payment information?

Do I contact the online retailer and tell them to remove my email address off the account? (Although as I'm not the account holder data protection will probably stop me from getting them to make a change)

Or do I do something else? (And no I don't mean going ordering a bunch of stuff on their credit card )

I want to do the right thing but not sure what that is.

    Re: Interesting Dilemma

I would contact the person who made the account and let them know the situation. Seems the simplest way to resolve it.

in all seriousness, letting the store know that they are emailing the wrong person may well go a long way to resolving the issue, rather strange that they dont have your email on file though, as password resets and so on should use it.

    Re: Interesting Dilemma

Well I don't have the guys proper email address so I got to call or text the guy.

Will properly try the online store first.

Its pretty dumb that an online retailer doesn't have verification when setting up an account.

    Re: Interesting Dilemma

(Just came to light last week)

The issue I'm having someone has the same email address as me, mine ends in googlemail.com whereas the other person ends in gmail.com.

I get all his emails despite number of occasions on trying to contact the individual but no sucess.

Will be contacting google about this tonight as I think he will be getting my emails too? And I get emails back and fourth (work related).

Wow, I didn't think to check for an issue like that before you mentioned it but it seems to be a google issue too.

I have firstname.surname@googlemail.com but the email was actually sent to firstnamesurname@gmail.com.

What on earth is going on?

Edit: According to Google if you have the @googlemail.com then you automatically have the @gmail.com address as well so the issue Macman and myself thought we had is not the answer. Just tested it and can sign into the @gmail.com account using same password as on the @googlemail.com account.

Also the dot or lack off has no effect either as google says the mail system ignores the dot so by the fact I have the firstname.surname account I also have firstnamesurname account.

Probably just comes down to the other guy entering the wrong email address when signing up.

Thats very odd... Google identifies email addresses the same regardless of the @Gmail or @Googlemail, they are entirely the same inbox so this seems highly unlikely... are you sure there isnt a typo in the email address?

And yes google excludes fullstops in your email address so having test.test@gmail.com will go to testtest@gmail.com, handy when you need to register on some sites with a 'unique' email address as you can just add random dots to your email .

    Re: Interesting Dilemma

contact vendor and the person it's meant to be sending to. Should resolve the issue. I got some guy's company emailing me for a while a few years ago. I just emailed back and the problem quickly resolved. Bar a one-off occurence a few months ago it's all been fine since.

    Re: Interesting Dilemma

I'm getting the muppets Playstation emails and Manchester United newsletter, will try adding him to my Playstation and contact him that way.

I can't even unsubscribe to the Manchester Newsletter, can only block it.

Must say, he doesn't half spend some amount of money on Fifa coins via PS store. Must've spent over £300 :/!!
