    Mahjong.

Just looking for general information on this game the Japanese are crazy over from anyone who knows anything about it.

Is it similar to Chess? As deep as Chess? I know it looks more like Dominoes, but there seems to be a more tactical feel to it.

Anyone played it? What's the basics of the game?

    Cheers.

Yep, my parents have a set.

(I'm guessing you mean the gambling variant rather than the matching tiles affair you can get on many naff computer labels)

It's more like rummy than dominoes. Basically you are looking to collect sets of 3 (a "pung") or 4 (a "kong") of a kind, although there are many other tiles that you can pick up that affect your score, in addition to special hands which score a variety of amounts and differ in the chances of getting them.

You can either pick a tile up from the wall (tiles are arranged in 4 walls of equal length )2 tiles high or depending on the situation you can "call" when another pplayer is discarding to complete 3 or 4 of a kind (but not pairs ... unless it is the final tile you require to go "Mah Jong") ... it's kind of difficult to explain, but it is easy to pick up. As with any game though, it will take a while to master it.

A good memory of what has been discarded is key.

It isn't similar to chess at all - it is a game for gambling, each hand is scored at when someone goes "Mah Jong" and cash/chocolates/anything you're plaing for changes hands. A full game takes ages to play, but each hand can be completed relatively quickly, so you can play as little or as much as you want.

Hope that helps a bit, I'll probably post some more because I've probably missed a few bits.

Its possible to play a varient of this with several packs of playing cards. Its quite good as a christmas game if you've got enough people round too.

I'm on about the sort of Mahjong you get released for the likes of the PSP, Ds and every other console on its Japanese launch - so Japanese Mahjong I suppose, if there are different types.

Got a set here too. Havent played in over a year - coz everyone I know that plays, plays silly money (worst would be my family), whereas I play a penny a "fun".

Im the fastest tho at building the mini wall - I like to get some space nice and early

There is a great deal of luck involved in Mah-jong which makes it nothing like chess. And it's origins are actually Chinese hence the four walls. It's dead easy to pick up, a set that you buy will come with the instructions needed to play. Basically you pick up and discard tiles attempting to get 3 or 4 of a kind (pung's and kong's), but there are other factors involved in the final outcome such as Wind and Dragon - or flower - tiles.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
