    Email providers

I have used ISP based email accounts for years, and it acts as a bit of an anchor to the ISP. I do use Gmail for some stuff but want to shift away from Google. Pondering what the best route to take is? I want to avoid ad funded services, happy to pay a monthly/yearly fee.
    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    JC

    Re: Email providers

Register a domain name? Many domain registrars also offer e mail services as well. Or you can register a domain name and with some effort and ongoing administration time, self host a mail server.

    Re: Email providers

There was a fairly small company, based in Australia IIRC, that offered good value email and hosting services, and good customer service. I used them for a while, but my needs moved on. I just can't remember their name. I must look it up, because I could use such an email provider at the moment, too. If I can find the name, maybe an old invoice, I'll post it, unless someone beats me to it.

    Re: Email providers

I think Peter is right, the best option if you don't mind paying would be to register a domain name but don't use your name as the domain because things like Josh@josh.com sounds ridiculous.

I still use outlook.com with my live account. The interface is better than gmail and it works better with outlook

I don't use them any longer but I've always found TSOHost be be pretty decent. Are you just looking for email, or something like hosted Exchange?

Just email, have had issues with outlook/Hotmail not letting through some stuff.

    Re: Email providers

Outlook.com/Hotmail are *very* not Hosted Exchange.

That said, if it's plain email and you're not too fussed about a fancy web UI then any lowend webhosting package with TSOHost (or others) will provide you with what you need.

    Re: Email providers

You might want to check with the ISP before taking any action. I've had a mail account for over 20 years with an ISP, long after I stopped using their services.

Admitedly it might be because I signed up back when it was a dial-up service, but it's still working after all this time, even after they've had major restructing

QiQ - they are good but have gone up in price recently. I'm with them at the moment.

    Re: Email providers

I did look at QiQ, seems like a reasonable price for the year. Are there any other options that people use?

Yup, that's them. I knew someone would know who I meant. Thanks, Dave.

    Re: Email providers

I use OVH as a hosted exchange provider as I can then sync mail between multiple machines and devices very easily. I use to use 1and1 for the same but OVH are about 1/4 of the price.

I do use my own name as a domain as it allows me use multiple alias for email, meaning that I have an email address for each site and forum I use. Its easy to track who is then sending me spam or junk and I can just block that address as and when I want. Its a bit of a manual process but works well for as part of an antispam solution.
