Re: What Does It Mean To Be European?

I don't think it means anything. It was an idealistic idea, but the reality of large bureaucratic super states made up of many disparate parts, isn't as popular now. 1984, etc. It's really a business state, and only changes lives on that level. Culturally I'm not sure it changes anything. My culture is my identity.

yes. Quite. enforcing laws seems to be optional in some EU countries depending on whether it suits them or not. The French striking in Calais going unchallenged for one.

the UK is not a signatory to the Shengen agreement, which just abolished any border controls between those signatories (mainly the Low Countries)

Re: What Does It Mean To Be European?

All groups, however large or small, are fundamentally a fallacy and are only given legitimacy though law and personal belief. It's true you're more likely to fine commonality in groups at certain scales (country wide for example we're more similar than other countries - we speak the same language, arguably have similar beliefs to a certain degree and other things) but even these break down as the sample size is reduced. I largely share values with my neighbours, but I'm atheist and my neighbours are devout christians for exmaple.

I find the notion of grouping yourself into a nation / region mostly absurd at any level. Technically I'm a European, British, Yorkshireman, Sheffield-er but it's all pretty meaningless as it tells you nothing about me as an individual. I am an individual, just like everyone else.

With regards to being part of Europe (that being a separate issue to identity) , there are many good reasons why Europe should try and work together - financial / security / good relations between countries / joint projects such as the ESA or Cern. We can do more together through co-operation. But personally I rather enjoy the idea of Europe with a rich and varied cultural heritage. It makes us the interesting, if somewhat messy part of the liberal and democratic West. Long may we continue to co-operate, be different and have our own cultures and ideas within a greater European family.

We do not consider ourselves European. We are British. We just happen to be located near Europe.
    Britannia was the greatest empire.

What does it mean to be European? It means that your European country will be invaded by East Europeans who will
    - cause surge in population
    - cause a housing crisis ( via free council houses i.e. housing benefit )
    - increase crime rate and variety of crimes
    - worsen overcrowding on public transport
    - lower wages of locals
    - increase cimpetition when getting jobs
    - take up all low income jobs
    - live off benefits and use it to buy 2 x BMW cars
    - be racist towards any Blacks or Asians
    - take over a city
    - increase the number of beggars
    etc.

Being European atm is something that every European should be ashamed of.

Let's put that 38% in perspective - that's over 120 million people over the age of 16. There's no requirement to have a passport in the US. We can travel to Canada with no passport. Same with Mexico, and most of Central America. If there's a need to obtain one to travel overseas, as long as your name isn't on a 'list', the waiting time can be as little as a couple of hours, up to a couple of days, depending on the history of the applicant. Sometimes, I'm part of that 38%. Sometimes I'm not. It's not even a minor inconvenience to renew on need. Unlike a drivers license.

As for your friend, we have 50 states, each with their own statewide boards of education, which are further broken down into county boards of education - each with their own priorities and prerequisites. As long as they meet a national standard, they can pretty much teach what they choose. So, in a single nation with ~350 million people, the experience of your singular friend isn't even a blip on a statistics chart.

Calais is the only port in France? It's not as if the French government have thrown up border controls preventing movement of goods and individuals.

I wrote a lengthy response to this, but realised that I was being dragged into a Daily Mail Clickbait war, so I decided that the best thing to do was to rise above.

Speak for yourself; the royal 'we' is unnecessary here. "Glorious" Britain has invaded nine of of ten countries. Immigrants make a net contribution to the UK Welfare system. The housing crisis is the direct fault of the Thatcherite Housing Act of 1980. Minimum wage, job creation and housing is clearly the responsibility (read:fault) of UK Government, not migrant workers.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your prejudices. Unless you're just trolling, in which case, LOL.
