    https://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/faqs/damfaqs.html

    a better link

How was chemical heat caused by setting concrete in the dam dissipated?

By embedding more than 582 miles of 1-inch steel pipe in the concrete and circulating ice water through it from a refrigeration plant could produce 1,000 tons of ice in 24 hours. Cooling was completed in March 1935.

I find this sort of thing very interesting, particularly the comparison between building and works in older history and those of today.

As the above article states, it all comes down to economics, sadly. I'd love to see some really beautiful, long-lasting works of architecture. Yes, I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but personally, my eye sees little beauty is much of present day and modern architecture. Such a shame, because there are truly some awe-inspiring, breath-taking, achievements to be made in architecture, as evidenced by the past.
