Neither I, nor as far as I know, other mods have any say in the vast majority of competitions, so what I'm about to say is personal opinion, not based on any actual knowledge of the process.

Knowing some of the people in HEXUS (not forums) I'd be astonished, staggered even, if winning was based on anything other than pure random selection, and that what people post, be it gimme-gimme, or some sob story, had ANY effect at all. If it did have an effect, I'd expect it to be counter-productive, but I don't believe it has any effect.

I have also noted winners drawn from among our most prolific members, to members that have posted, as in one recent example, exactly twice - once when entering, and once in astonishment at having won. I also regularly see winners I certainly don't even recognise as forum members.

And, of course, these competitions are put on in conjunction with industry partners, who are generally supplying the prize(s). I can't see them participating either, unless they were convinced the process was fair and genuine.

It no doubt won't stop the gimme-gimme posts, but to be honest, they usually just seem light-hearted and tongue in cheek anyway. So while I can't say from knowledge of the process that it has no effect I can say from knowledge of the people that I don't think there's a chance in hell that it does.

You are spot on right - we get emails, messages, Facebook messages daily asking for us to give people things - it doesn't work like that.

It's simple - you enter via the form it goes in to our database, we do some funky cleaning on it to make sure there are not spam posts etc.

The engine then picks winners - we add them to the list and the system emails out directly to people who have won with a unique link which has a form on it just for the winner to fill in.

If you don't respond, the system auto-nags you and chases - if it goes over a defined period we then re-draw, keeping the original winner logged for audit purposes.

Once someone has responded, we notify the manufacturers who ship everything directly to the winner - we don't touch any product at all.

The engine will show the winners on the site once they've given us their details.

    Simples.

Certainly not questioning either the process nor the integrity of the process - apologies if it came across as such. I'm grateful for the opportunities. I'd be more grateful for a win, but...

I have actually seen a site, which will go unnamed, that as much as stated that they awarded a 'random' drawing prize to a person that entered a post that was so witty and well thought out, they couldn't help but reward them. There was something of an uproar, but in the end, they owned the site, and were able to do whatever they wanted. It cost them a lot of readership, which included a lot of subscriptions. I wouldn't be hanging out in this particular neighborhood if I didn't think that things were on the up and up.

I guess such a criteria would be valid IF that was the point of the competition .... a bit like best photo/poem/cake competitions. Judging, by definition, would be subjective. But then, entrants would know they were submitting a photo, poem or cake for subjective judgement.

I don't remember ever having such a competition here, but we may have. And should. On cakes. I, of course, should be chief judge for having suggested it.

No? Bu ..... erm , bother.

On seconds thoughts, with visions of incipient food poisoning, maybe a poetry comp. And someone else can definitely judge that.

oh, I thought there were 3 prizes. One of those guys must've gotten extremely lucky and gotten a double prize. What're the odds.

Pity, I would've loved one of those.

Details are only posted once confirmed with the winner. They might not have heard back from the third yet/might be redrawing if they don't respond.

    Re: HEXUS competions

There is some good discussion in the thread, but it was rather detracting from the stunning prizes that had been donated by Crucial (and I'm very that I didn't win )

However, this points deserve wider discussion, so I have broken them out into a new thread. So please use this to post questions about HEXUS competions in general, whether it is promotion, administration or anything else that you have always wanted to ask, but never got round to!

Thanks But given you've split at my post, could you correct the spelling of the thread title so it doesn't look like I did it (Also maybe better in Suggestions than GD?)

    Re: HEXUS competitions

Hi, as a winner, still waiting (impatiently - but thanks, i am grateful!!!!) on my prize, and I have read and understand all the rules and instructions, i think it might be useful for the companies donating the prizes to email the winner directly, and very soon after notification of the winners details, to indicate their expected delivery times etc.
For example, having won a PC, I am now wondering (after more than a month) whether it is coming from elsewhere in the world and is subject to time to build, time to ship, clear customs etc etc
Obviously if the prize would realistically arrive within a week or so, it might not be necessary.
