This DVD Will Self-Destruct

This disc will self-destruct in 48 hours. That is the warning Walt Disney will issue this August when it begins to "rent" DVDs that after two days become unplayable and do not have to be returned.

what a great idea.... companies will "release" DVDs much cheaper.... they will get copied and then self destruct or whatever...

Would of thought WD would be trying to help the planet not add
to it's woes.

Maybe they could change it so it's edible and bring out the dvd in differant flavours.

Well in some ways it makes sense, how often do you rent a DVD and you just don't have time to return it. If it saves you that extra trip I think it may be woth it.

The real downside is just how long exactly do they last. If it stops working before 48 hours is up then that'd piss me off greatly, also do you lose quality as it deteriorates or is it a sudden thing?

i mean, if they go in 48 hours that means the maufactuters have to press them all, ship them and get them on the shelves, hoping people will buy them within a few hours otherwise theyll be useless

they gonna make a 'out of date' discount counter or something where u buy 'gone off' dvds, with carp quality for and only like 4 hours left or something

Now having not read anything about them...

My money would be on the "destruction mechanisim" of the DVD being triggered by exposure to air. So the DVD is manufacturered and packaged in a vacum (or alike). When the packaging is opened it triggers the DVD's decomposition.

Great idea imo, I only hope that the entire DVD degrades into a little pile of fungus. hmmm, perhaps its time to start a compost heap in my garden...I will feed it with used Dvds

Look likes I should have post more of the story

The discs stop working when a process similar to rusting makes them unreadable. The discs start off red, but when they are taken out of the package, exposure to oxygen turns the coating black and makes it impenetrable by a DVD laser.


The up side is, I guess you will be able to order them on line, which saves having to leave the house.

I cannot see them being pirated to any greater extent than a hire disk would be, unless disk copiers are Lazy (see above)

i think people instead of buying dvds and copying will just rent one, copy it and sell it on

the disk can be read, but wont after time, but if you copy it before you watch it then people will have a cheap way of getting 1:1 dvd copies, 3 quid a film, 1 quid a dvdr

sell for a fiver and your getting a quid, and a film




i reckon itll just make more pirates out there, silly pepole

I kinda like this, cos I always end up paying a fine cos I return the DVD late.

They should really do something about recycling these DVDs tho.
