    Night pics

I was wondering how you take the night pictures where you can see the car lights as long 'streaks'.
This is my attempt but this was the most 'streaky' I could get the lights.
    Its a bit blurry as I didn't have/use a tripod

Also another pic, I took this when I was in HK, I really like it and methinks it one of the best photos ive ever taken

    EDIT: fixed link

You definitely need a tripod and longer exposure times, 2-3 seconds.

Edit: Gah just beat me too it

Think I tried that but the picture becomes really bright. Also, on my second pic the clouds seem too bright and look really weird, is there anyway to correct that when taking the photo?

p.s. I use an IXUS 400 if anyone is wonderin.

The pic of Hong Kong is totally pukka, technically a bit overexposed but if anything that adds to the atmosphere IMO. Great pic!

Edit: didn't read your last post fully, sorry. The bright clouds are just overexposure; you could have made them darker by doing a shorter exposure time, but then the city would have been a bit dark. If you'd taken the pic 10 minutes later it probably would have been a more balanced exposure. TBH if you're in a decent shooting location and the sun is going down, then just stay there and keep shooting for an hour, it's amazing how the mood of your pictures will change from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after. I burned up three rolls on my last night in Tokyo looking over the bay towards the city having crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

I should really get back into photography; I loved sunset and night shooting and it was easily the type of photography I was best at.

Aaaanyway, TBH I think you're going to struggle a bit to take decent light trail photographs with a point and shoot digital like an Ixus 400. The way to do it on a camera with more manual control is to set a small aperture like F16 or F22 and then do as long an exposure as possible- realistically at least 15 seconds, possibly 30. My best light trail photograph was taken on my Fuji GSW690II (couldn't resist slipping that detail in) at F32; because it was summer it didn't start to get dark until 9pm so there wasn't a great deal of traffic about. I ended up timing the exposure with my watch (I had to anyway since the camera has no meter) and taking the lens cap off as cars went past, building up the total exposure bit by bit.

If I had a film scanner I'd be able to dig out some of my old slides and show them to you. I have one taken in the centre of Ginza (in Tokyo) near the Sony building which I'm really proud of.

They don't make the Ixus 400 any more, but you can get a similarly good camera for £140. As an example:

Not loading properly for me. I thought it was because I'd jumped the gun clicking on the Hong Kong piccy.

hey you don't need to worry about over exposed photos with almost every standard photo editing software editing suite you lower the brightness, if i can recall correctly, even the standard issue MS Paint (built into all windows as standard) is able to increase decrease the bright/contrast levels in a photo.

but as ive been learning in college is to use a tripod whever you can, and practice, practice practice practice...
