    UCAS help

Im hoping the guys and the girls with some knowledge of ucas can help me out a bit here because im getting confused

Last year i failed two of my a-levels leaving me having achieved only one full A level during my two years at college. I took the desicion to go back to college for a third year. Due to one reason or another it wasnt possible to resit the A levels i failed so i ended up starting three new AS levels. I did this in the hope that with some decent grades this year i will have enough UCAS points to go to university.

I applied to two universitys and have found that one has turned me down. I can see why really as i have only one full A level and will only have 3 extra AS levels if i pass this year. It seems i dont meet the entry requirements of the course

I have yet to recieve a reply from the other university but assuming that they also turn me down, which is likely considering my position, im stuck. The options would be to continue at college and hopefully gain full A levels or use UCAS extra/clearing to find a course i can get on.

This is where im stuck really. Despite reading the guides online and what i have been sent through the post im confused. It doesnt really explain much about ucas extra which i think would be my next course of action. Has anyone used ucas extra/ know how it works?

I was really hoping to go to uni this year as i'l have already spent too much time at college by the end of this year. Also theres the concern of fees changing next year. Has anyone else ended up in a simmilar position?

Bugger, sounds like a pickle. I've never heard of UCAS extra, UCAS normal was bad enough! I'd really recommend going in to see your college higher education person and extract as much advice and help from them as you possibly can - you shouldn't have to do this all by yourself!

Yeah - like bertie said, I'd consult someone at your college. Also, I'd have applied for the full 6 universities - even if you're not one one you top choices. 6 is better than 2. I have a friend who only applied for one. He got turned down with that (like you), and then applied for another 6. At least one of those accepted him.

If I were you, I wouldn't spend another yet in college, since you've had at least 3, but then that's up to you and how you feel.

Also, if a uni DOES accept you, but you find in the summer you don't QUITE get the marks, then I've heard that you can try ringing up the uni to see if they'll reconsider. It might work, it might not. Probably depends if they've filled the course.

    Help on Extra

    Help on Clearing

TBH i think those links will be able to answer all of the questions in much more depth than i will. Personally i never had to use the extra or clearing route however from what i hear as long as you are organized and methodical and just jump through all the hoops its a straight-forward process.

Don't worry about never finding a place though as i have friends who are at univerity now and only got one "E" at A level. Goes to show that if you are dedicated enough and have determination you can get a degree. Saying that a good set of results always helps.

    Good Luck

exactly, just hope you do well, and see where you can get with clearing - you live in brum, so somewhere like coventry isnt too far from home - ive got a few mates their and you dont need many a levels to get in - so a couple of good AS's might be ok...theres also wolvo locally which also dont have too high entry requirements.....they said 180 ucas points at cov for my course....which for me was DDD i think in A level terms, obviously as you only have AS, they count for half, so youd need to get higher grades than me....but if you take your A level into account to theres a chance you could get onto a course you like thru clearing, as they normally accept ppl with slightyl less grades anyway, apprently there were ppl who got onto the course i applied to at cov with 140 ucas points, so who knows

    Few more details.

My one A level is an E for business studies so not too good really. Im predicted B for history C for Geography and B for ICT (AS level).

I applied for Wolverhampton and they turned me down because apparently i need more than one full A level according to their admissions. Worscester is the other university- but no reply from them as yet.

I dont really want to move away from home as i just cant afford it so i applied for the local ones (except brum because the entry requiremtns are fairly high)

Assuming i get c's for my AS's il have 160 points by my reckoning 1 A level at Egrade 40 points, 3AS c's 120points. So i should have enough for courses at both Wolverhampton and Worscester. I am applying for media studies at these- popular course.

What went wrong with your A levels? slacking off and not going to lessons?
Maybe depending on the course and uni, but uni is much harder then college.
Just turning up for the lectures isnt enough like it is at college. Just make a list
of extenuating circumstances for when you dont get enough points.

Clearing may be your best friend here Ste, as most places will ask for more than one A level. Also, the problem with AS level's is that a lot of unis wont see them as the single qualifications that they are.
For example, the course i took needed "280 points from 3 or more A levels with no more than 50 points coming from an AS or equlivent qualification" or words to that effect. Basicly, most uni's will only allow a certain number of AS level points and the rest must come from A level or equilivent. Its worth while checking this out, as this may have been why you were refused from certain uni's. When going through clearing though, they mainly look at points and not how you got them.

Go and have a chat with Sallie Gilbert in student services, she's very very helpful, and tell her i said hi

If you havnt been to uni opendays, Go. Networking with people is important. Show that you have an interest in the course you've applied for, ask technical questions about it, and then explain your situation. They do listen, trust me when i say they would rather have somone with lower points that is commited over somone with high grades that doesnt give a rats about the course.

if you get what u think, 160 points isnt too bad - you wont get into brum, they wanted 300 points for my course , but wolvo and worcester are your best bets locally if u wish to stay at home - or even going to a local college and doing something like a HND (2 yrs), once thats under your belt i think theres a way of topping it up to a degree in another year at a relevent uni - and if you got a HND uve proved u can do the work

as for clearing, you can either ring up from college or do it online - iirc this year the clearing details of courses remaining came online at midnight the results came out, so it could prove useful staying up late, getting some courses ud like to go on and grabbing some phone numbers, then phoning around when u hit college and pick up your grades later and see what they say to you
