Music/Movie Recommendation Tools

Recently been playing around with www.music-map.com. A simple 'similar artists' finder.

Very basic interface - type in an artist name and it'll produce a floating "map" of names where the more similar the artist the closer the names are together. That's basically it. You can click on any name and it'll give you a new map based on that artist.

I'm always on the look our to discover new music as well as movies or books etc. that I might like, and the idea of "If you like that then try this" has always appealed.

So far it's been alright, seems to have the right idea.

Anyone else have any tool to recommend?

Interesting. I wondered why it was pointing me at a radio four programme but then I found out there's actually a group called Woman's hour as well.

Poor success on the 'like them as well' front for me unfortunately, but then everyone's tastes are different and an artist can change so much that the link might be made because someone liked a completely different track from the same artist that I did. Amazon, spotify etc. all do the usual 'user liked this and this' type links.

I use Trakt.tv and SeriesGuide on Android. I think their website is wonderful and the recommender engine is pretty good

You could also try using tastekid.com, which relies on aggregate data from its users to provide suggestions as well as its own algorithm.

I used to use Last.FM. It worked well for me, but I haven't been looking for new music in a while..
