    University bandwidth

just downloaded 260mb of updates through the university servers...less than 6mins
started out at something stupid like 1mb/sec then chilled out down to 600-700's..talk about sucking the internet for all its worth!

heh - is that using JANET ?

I recall getting rather similar speeds when I was at University and a friend used to go into the computer room when it was very late and bash the bandwidth for himself.

Just think though - with the advent of ADSL2 on the horizon and hopefully more LLU providers this year a speed like that at home is only around the corner

yeah it was great living in halls in that respect, when resnet (staffs unis shoddy excuse for a net connection) was working properly, could easily get 400kb/s of downstream and 100kps of upstream

that was thru JA.NET Tho ours is shoddy cos although we had a 622mbit connection to JA.NET, that was through stoke campus and we only have a 150mbit line to stoke

I'd guess you were downloading the updates in the residences, that seems slow for a uni connection.

I get about 6-7mb/sec from good sites on my computer here...

10mbit is a bit crap for uni net, I had that last year in my room
Though that was because they capped everyone to 10mbit, bastids.

If your IT deptment hasnt capped speeds and your on a decent link, then yes. Im lucky as Norwich goes into cambridge then to london so we get excellent speeds.

edit: to test it, try downloading SP2 standalone or office XP SP3.

edit2: thats more what youer should be getting.

MB downloads... thats Mega Bytes by the way... in some of these posts its

i'm at imperial college london and this hall of residence has a 2Mbit pipe to the internet. shared between all 300 of us here in this residence. send help please!

they're upgrading it to a 100Mbit connection to campus soon, but 'soon' probably means the summer, when i leave... In the lab i get about 1Mbyte/s during lunchtimes.
