I'm coming up to 10 years now on my Targus, which was £15 when I bought it, and it still looks brand new to me.

I've no doubt it's not as good as some of the others that people have listed, but considering what I paid, I'm pretty happy with it.

    Re: Quality Everyday Backpacks

Samsonite - last one worked for 13 years before (and this was the only problem) the rubberised tabs on the zips started disintegrating. Used for everything from everyday uni/work through to quick weekend trips. I think the mistake I made was sticking it through the washing machine as it got a bit grubby after all those years.

Replaced it with a High Sierra backpack (which is one of Samsonite's brands). Been brilliant so far, but is only about 2 years old! It has a laptop compartment which is padded, then a document compartment and the general space in the main compartment, has a small top pocket, then has two compartments, one on the very front which is about half height, and the other which is full height and sits between the front and main pockets.

I've also been looking for an everyday backpack to use around uni, and I came across the Bobby backpack, not sure if its what you're looking for but it has quite a few neat features and is worth checking out. It is, however, a little pricey.

I've not actually bought one though, so I can't say anything about its durability!

Warning - the North Face Borealis is not waterproof. It can handle light showers, but I got stuck in heavy rain the other day and the fabric was damp, and I had to take stuff out of the bag to let it dry. Things inside weren't wet, but would have probably got humidity damage - and paper in contact with the wet fabric would probably have absorbed some water. Annoying, and the only drawback.

To be fair, I suspect you'd struggle to find any pack which is completely waterproof. Even the Osprey I have which has a waterproof cover built in will leak a bit in very heavy rain. To get it completely waterproof you'd need to do something with the zips etc.

true, but thought I'd better flag in case it matters to the OP

    Re: Quality Everyday Backpacks

I'm very happy with my Swiss Gear laptop bag I bought from Amazon 2 years ago. Its reasonably well made and happily fits my 15-inch Laptop and my Macbook Pro 13 inch too. Have also had the power supplies for each system in there with them.

I am able to squeeze a Nikon D300 and extra lense in too, but it does get quite heavy with all that in it though.
