Not a single thread on the US election?

I know it's far from the UK, but through sheer influence, it probably matters somewhat.

And so far it's looking super close as was the case with Brexit, with Trump leading as I type.

I expect half the US to be displeased with the results when I wake up

It really is, in every way. I cannot believe that trump is almost certain to win now, just as I couldn't believe that brexit had all but won by this time that night.

It is just as incomprehensible really - you offer people what should be a straightforward choice between a sensible decision that is good for the world, and a stupid Decision that is bad for the world, and they put up a big two fingers and take the stupid decision. Trump is even more so as at least with brexit you can blame the lies people were told in order to get them to vote out - but with trump the choice is even more clear...

This will have ramifications throughout the world. It would be a very scary time to be an American! In some ways also scary to be trump when the US people finally realise that he cannot actually do what he promised. Sure he will probably be able to destroy the healthcare system (not that premiums will actually drop as people want, but hey) and he could declare war, but he won't be able to force through this wall or ban on muslims etc etc..or at least hopefully as the senate should be able to temper those sort of things.

Still a very sad night. Just have to really hope that the last few states can pull it back for Clinton...it's unlikely but possible!

Listening to his speech, he is saying absolutely nothing. Its all spin and BS, no policies, no numbers, just empty rhetoric.

I need someone sensible to tell me that it's alarmist to expect this to lead to the break-up of NATO and then the piecemeal invasion of europe by Russia.

At least the result's done the pound (when valued against the dollar) a favour!

And now I'm going to cry.

Re: Not a single thread on the US election?

Well it's a great argument for democracy. Giving the people the power means you have to accept the views of all, even if you don't like them or even when they are self-destructive. Proponents will say it's worth making mistakes because the principle is greater than any temporary set back. So yes, Russia is going to be very pleased, and large swathes of America are going to be fine in the short term. Progress towards a fairer, more inclusive world will have to take a breath.

Meanwhile, fingers on your investment buttons...

Re: Not a single thread on the US election?

It does show (again) how flawed the us and U.K. Implementation of s representative democracy is IMO rather than being a good argument for it. This would have been a very, very different story if it was a true democracy where you had the option to vote for someone you actually wanted in power rather than a douche or turd sandwich...

Could be a dangerous few days for non-white and Muslim Americans. Too many people are likely to take this as validation of their racist beliefs and will take it too far. Hope I am wrong but we saw it in the UK, and typically things go further in the states...

It may hasten the demise of the US as a global economic power. On the other hand Russia has an aging demographic largely supportive of Putin and the Soviet system, and in 10 years a lot of them will be dead. Look to China and possibly India as the future super powers.

    On the plus side:

At least the Americans will have to stop laughing at us for Brexit now.

Re: Not a single thread on the US election?

It's weird. I've never had a nightmare where I've been typing a forum post before, yet here I am. And the nightmare is truly horrifying. I dreamt .... I almost can't say it .... Trump is President. He actually won.

Thank God it's only a nightmare, and when I wake up .....
