Silicon afterlife

If you think back over the years youve been messing about with computers i bet you can think of a lot of bits that have for some reason or another gone bang, or fizzle, or fzzzt, or....... you get the idea. Some probably died before their time and some should probably never been inside a case in the first place. What i was wondering was which bits do you hope are now living the goodlife in silicon nirvana and which have been cast down into the deepest circles of silicon hell.
Just a thought.

I think an old 8GB Maxtor met a hammer after failing me. I haven't lost a hard drive since.

PS: I always describe my hardware as going to hell when it dies. 5 years ago: "Well Rich, that TNT2 finally went to hell this weekend. I'd like to say it had a good run, but it just sucked its whole life."

I had something COME BACK from the afterlife.

Blew up a £3k printer - there was SMOKE. Turn it off promptly, then turned it back on, armed with a fire extinguisher (dunno why to be honest... it was clearly dead.)

But NO - the damn thing worked for another three days before refusing to print any more pages. Two of the four solid ink melters had blown up... the other two kept it going for three more days.

Amazing stuff - good job it was under warranty to be honest!

i once looked after some servers in a hospital and a whole bunch of them got fried during an electrical storm when the lightening conductor didnt do its job.

after replacing cpues and power supplies on a few of them, i only had one left that i couldnt get to work.

I took it back to the workshop to have a once over and just couldnt get the thing going.

So before i called out the waranty to get a replacemnt - i tried the old 4 foot drop test - which was taught to me by a royal marine radio engineer. I held the thing at arms length - and dropped it from about 4 foot so it landed flat.

Gave it a kick for good measure.

plugged it all back in and the damn thing worked. Couldnt beleive it. Went on for another 6 months before it got replaced due to new server rollout.

Always worth a try - remember - the 4 foot drop test.

i really do hope my Creative Sound Blaster 64 is living the high life in heaven - it was good to me!

although i must say i have seen alot of things go pop - mainly power supplies or when a customer has installed a memory stick in the wrong way round.

and the amount of crushed CPU's i've seen over the years......
