    Schindler's List...(MAY OFFEND THE OVER-ZEALOUSLY SENSITIVE..somehow..)

With respect... we aren't here to discuss what went on in the death camps or the ethics behind the whole holocaust thing, there are enough documentaries on at the mo to learn about the death camps etc.

This thread is here to shed light on one moment in the film by Steven Spielberg...

What technique( s ) were used to achieve this effect?? I mean how did they manage to make the girl's coat red whilst leaving everything else black and white??

I would not like to discuss the reasons why it was done just how it was done...

    and...

I suspect that they could have used these methods...

a). They used a program like Adobe After Effects...

    or...

b). They ploughed through thousands and thousands of frames and did it by hand with a program like Adobe Photoshop...

Needless to say the latter is not likely at all, but if there is anyone who can set me straight on this matter I'd be very greatful...

They could have filmed it in colour and just made sure that the girl's coat was (in reality) a totally different colour to everything else in the scene and then automatically desaturated all the other colours completely but not the coat (or rather by a lesser amount judging at that picture)... That's what I'd do. I think there's software that can ID and track objects throughout a sequence and apply false colour to them (think they've done that with a load of old B&W films)... It wouldn't suprise me if it was done frame by frame considering the cash involved though!

digitally edited, shot on colour film...I'm guessing all actors wore colours except red (or some some colour that will stand out from everyone else's costume), so like blue screen but in reverse perhaps and target the one colour whilst grey-scaling the rest...
then once that colour has been 'singled out' you can set hue/saturation point and there you go.
...i could be way off but thats how i would do it

edit: hmm..you got in there just as I did, only I didn't hit post until i'd got back from grabbing a coffee!

Thanks for your replies but something more definite, though...
