I work for a boiler company. My boiler knowledge is good, central heating OK... may as well try me.

    Right then, here goes...

We've got a problem with the electric switch that diverst the water to either heat the water tank or do the central heating.

Basically, its knackered... it went just before Chrimbo, so will be replaced in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I managed to rig it so that when the heating is on, it heats both water and rads together... which is what the switch is supposed to select (one or other or both) so basically its set to 'open'... not a huge problem, it'll do to get by.

The tricky bit is the rads... these things eem to have a mind of their bleedin own as to whether to heat up or not. I've been round and drained the air out of them all (there was pretty much none on any of them), but I can't get them all to heat up...

We have thermostatic valves on each rad, no room thermostat. If I se the valves to 0 on all but one rad, I get a nice hot rad on the open one... I can do this all over the house... buuuut... no matter how I try and set ALL the rads, I can't seem to get a balanced heat in each room.

The switch is a honeywell jobby and the pump is a Grundfos Selectric (its a well old one but its working as I can hear the water gurgling throuhg it and hear it kick on)... the pump has a three speed selector which is set to '3' atm.

Basically, I'm stuck... I've heard of balancing radiators, but I've no clue how to even START, let alone do it...

Switching valves are a bugger in hard water areas, I've gone through 2 of them mate - as for the thermostatic valves I've only ever used a room thermostat so I can't really advise on them. Not much help really

    HOWEVER

I would MASSIVELY suggest you try raising the question here mate

If your diverter valve is set to allow flow through both ch and your dhw cylinder then you're probably not getting enough flow around the ch system.

Kez, that's what I thought, so I've tweaked few of the stop valve thingies to force at least a bit of water downstairs.
