Sigh. Will be best known to most for the Likely Lads, of which I am v fond - always a hallmark of good writing if you can conduct exchanges, indeed whole conversations, in the style of the characters (which I do, frequently).
RIP our kid.

Enjoyed his stuff, rip.

I was saddened to hear this brilliant writing.
James Bollam (who played the other likely lad and probably had a more successful career) hasn't been seen much of late. Bridget Forsyth (Thelma) is still on the small screen ("Still Open All Hours" for example)

Yes, JB as you say not seen so much on TV since leaving New Tricks but still working here & there. A lot of good, serious work under his belt (in the spirit of its being nice to appreciate the living ), stage/film &c. At the lighter comedy-drama end, always meant to give the Beiderbecke Trilogy a re-watch - he also had a cameo in another Alan Plater BBC one-off drama, The Last Will and Testament of Billy Two-Sheds, which featured new Dr Who Jodie Whittaker in a very early, if not her earliest, TV appearance. A train of connection which leads nowhere in particular except by being topical and that I [modestly] credit myself with having recognized her as an actor with potential.
