I thought he died a while back - remember reading it in the metro of all things.

On May 21, 2004, the San Francisco-based Association of World Citizens gave Petrov its World Citizen Award along with a trophy and $1000 "in recognition of the part he played in averting a catastrophe."

$1000 hardly seems enough. "Oh, thanks, you saved the world. Say, here's a mars bar." Bit of a slap in the face. I mean that's not even a holiday. Wouldn't cover a return flight to somewhere nice nevermind accommodation at a hotel etc. Poor chap.
